1973 CB500 Chopper Project

Hello everyone!
I'm new here and am just making myself familiar with the site lately!
Recently I purchased a project bike.
It is a 1973 CB500.
The bike came in parts and two "blown" engines.
I got the bike put together as a roller to make sure everything was there and for the most part, it was!

My questions now are about the engine.
I don't want to put money into powder coating the frame and painting the gas tank and buying all the odds and end parts before I know the engine is repairable.

I asked the original owner if the bike was blown up at high rpms or lack or oil or anything and he said he didn't know.
*The motor is not seized*
What are some common problems with these engines and what can be done to fix them?
Think I could get it running with new pistons and rings?

You're not going to know  what needs fixed until you either take it apart or get it running... 

Tearing down and rebuilding is a guarantee, but it might be ok without all that.

If it turns over, i would personally just go with a tuneup and see what happens.  But that's just me.

get a compression tester an a leakdown tester guessing elimintated. The other things you listed your going to need to buy/do anyways

For sure compression test first, low compression could be a host of problems that you'll have to address by taking it apart  and finding out which of these problems it could be, and if you're taking down the top end, you may as well do it right ,split the cases , check the bearings and every thing else. Fix it clean it paint it , reassemble and you'll have not wasted time ,money or effort. Check the tention on the cam chain before you take the cam out so you'll know if it has to be replaced for sure ( should do it anyways since you are already there ) same for the primary drive chain. You only want to spend on this motor once,
  It'll be interesting to see what PO thinks "blown up " is.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.
