Topic: Anybody know the NC motorcycle laws for builds?

Mostly I am interested in side license plate legality and requirements. Ive heard of some states (south carolina, or Georgia i think) that will ticket you for having a plate visible only on one side. I know older bikes can get away with a lot of things. I feel with a lot of things I can just say hey that's original, and the inspector wont know the difference.

SO... what am i required to have on my bike to pass inspection?

Just put the plate on the bike horizontal and head off all the problems.
Have confidence in your bike when you go for inspection knowing it is RIGHT.

BTW.... Older bikes do not get way with things.

If you have turn signals on the bike they have to work but they are not required for insp.Which means you can take them off!!!

NO front brake required, ( I know , but I ride a chopper)
 I'm not sure about a vertical plate here in NC but I have seen guys running them.
  Also what is said in the Motorcyclist Handbook for the test as far as requirements is not even close to what the AMA says the STATE minimums are to pass STATE road inspection. After ( I THINK )a vehicle is 30 years old in NC  it no longer requires a safety inspection and you can get an antique plate for it!!!

Well the title for my built is under none operational so it does need an inspect to get on the road. I'm building 2 seats and doing the plate off to the side will make my life easier and the back end cleaner.

I actually have an antique tag on my 77 550F number 93 .  Its neat and draws alot of interest.  No inspection required.

"Any operator of a motor vehicle (...) who shall display a number plate in other than a horizontal upright position, shall be guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor."   N.C.G.S.A. §20-63(b)

Take it all with a grain of salt. The fact is most cops don't know the statute well enough or don't care enough to pull you over for something like a vertical plate. There is a similar law in Alabama, and I ran with a vertical plate on my cb350f for as long as I owned it and never got hassled. Its just a relatively small risk I took in order to have my plate the way I wanted it.

the one issue is my title is "currently inoperable" its a rebuild project so it will be a more through (s/p ?) inspection, with a more knowledgable guy. But I could say that that was original style or something and get it grandfathered in.

Oh I meant after any inspection. Definitely you'll have to get everything up to code for the inspection, but once you get the OK from the inspector, you can switch back to a vertical plate and it is unlikely a cop will go out of his way to pull you over for it...

NC used to issue a title for registration purposes only, non-operative( ie,  just to get a title) no PLATE issued, which in turn meant no driving on the road!!! DO you have a license plate for your MC???Then later when the vehicle was repair and roadworthy you went and bought a plate!  Since JAN of 2012 they won't do that any more because the vehicle requires an INSPECTION before you can get it licensed.
You may only be required a ROADWORTHY check. But if I were you I'D have a copy of the NC rquirements with me and if my bike was a 75 or older I'd ask WHY ? does it require an inspection

I currently have one of those inoperable titles.... So to retitle it I have to have an inspector come out and inspect it as roadworthy.
