"HELP" with install of exhaust header on a 750 A
« on: October 14, 2012, 05:56:57 PM »
I removed the exhaust system to clean sand and paint the old rusted header on my 76-705A. Today I tried to reinstall it and failed 2X. Most of the problem is with the #2 cylinder and the flange that pushes on the split flanges.  I can't get the outer flange past the frame to mount it . I realize that the flanges are designed with a narrower spots to allow them to pass the frame so that they can be installed with the clearance needed to clear the fin above it.I am about to take the grinding wheel to the fin that is hitting the frame. All the other flanges mount properly. Is there a sequence needed to be followed for the instillation.I surfed the net and found a parts site that shows I need those gaskets. I need some advice . Thanks

 Hey Dude,
I'm assuming that you have the stock setup like the attached photo with studs in the head and the collars that bolt to it?
I typically use the spigots that bolt onto the head with countersunk screws and the pipes slip over them and "clamp" on.
For yours, the shells, #13, can be rotated back and forth to facilitate getting the Collars, #14, into place on the studs. I couldn't find a set handy to look at but I don't recall ever having to cut/gring anything to get them on. Maybe if all else fails, loosen the motor mounting bolts and pry the engine around till they slip past the frame? but again, I don't recall ever having too much trouble with it.
So I guess that does absolutly nothing to help,,,, huh?

Hey Dude,
I did a little scrounging around today for you. I have a 1978 motor that has the studs like yours. It's on the ground and I'm not upto putting it in a frame right now.
It has been a long time but seems like I recall a similar problem to yours. I think I solved it like this?
Remove the studs from the head at the problem pipe,
Replace the Gaskets,
Place the Collar at the head and put the pipe through it,
Slide the shells in place,
put the collar in place,
replace the studs and nuts.
Maybe something like that will work. Again, It's been a while. Hope this will work for you before you have to whip out the torch.

Thanks for your input.I went to the Honda dealer today and bought the "Copper Rings". I plan on working on it tomorrow .Your suggestion to remove the stud is a good one and I will keep that in mind.

Thanks Chunk

Ok I finally got the header on.The issue was with the way the spacers were installed. I had to go back and look at the service manual and look at pictures to detect the direction  the spacers are installed. They are installed with the double  flare end pointing out toward the wheel. DUH! How about me I started the post and came up with the answer my self.
I think I will kiss my self in the mirror.
