Glove question. Perforated Leather v. Non-Perf Leather.
« on: July 06, 2006, 11:51:38 AM »
I am looking at getting some good gloves after seeing the thread about wearing good gear.

Anyway, the model I am looking at has versions in perforated leather and solid, non-perforated leather.  I live in a hot climate and wonder how much cooler the perforated leather gloves are.  I ask about the temperature issue because I MUCH prefer the looks of the solid leather, but if the perforated are tons cooler, then that would be an issue.

Also, are the perforated ones weaker?  Would the gloves tear along the perforations in a crash/slide?

What do you wear now?  I wear basic leather gloves - not 'motorcycle' gloves - just leather gloves, no lining.  I don't find them hot even in 100 degree weather (everything is hot at that point, the least of which is my hands).

I also just picked up a set of Joe Rocket gloves that are waterproof, and a mix of nylon and leather.  They're WAY too hot - will likely never ever wear them.  I'll be putting them on eBay right quick.  Wore them once.

I like the feeling of just a layer of leather between me and the controls of the bike.  I don't know if perforated leather will tear more easily than non-perf, but logically it should be 'weaker'.  However, the weakness may not come into play in a typical accident situation.

Right now I'm wearing Army-issue Flight Gloves.  Not good for riding since they are just a super-thin layer of leather on the palm and part of the fingers and thin nomex fabric everywhere else.  Would be just this side of useless in a slide.

The gloves I am looking at are black leather and my only concern is the heat for the solid leather but I don't like the looks of the perforated leather.

I'm looking at these.  Modern protection with built-in armor and old-school looks:

Non-Perf (the ones I prefer):

I would go with the Non-Perf my self.  Also, well oiled leather (ugly) will last in a slide better then dry, shiny leather.  I have a set of light gloves that are in 3rd year of getting that right amount of oil, grease and other ick that will make them last.

I looked at the description of those glove and even the perforated gloves have Integrated knuckle armor for protection. It really depends on how hot it is where you are and how long you riide. you are now going to get a great deal of difference in temperature if they are both black anyway. and it looks as though the non-perforated gloves have some sort of venting on the sides.

In the summer, I use the elkskin "Ropers" from RiderWearhouse.  About $45 and bullet proof. Great for pruning bushes with thorns, too. They don't come in black- so what. I love these things.

I have a pair of JoeRocket gauntlets and had the same problem, now that its hot out. Plus the gauntlets look REEdiculous when wearing short sleeves.

SO last week I bought the perforated gloves, the exact ones you show there. I think they were $60 CDN. Good investment. They are tre comfortable and my hands do feel noticeably cooler now. Go for em.

Whats the use of wearing gloves if your going to ride with your arms unprotected?

So because someone rides without protection on their arms, they shouldn't bother wearing protection anywhere else?

Makes a lot of sense... ::)

I use Motocross gloves in the summer. They are much cooler and more comfortable than full leather, and still have some protection were you need it most. Most of them are not that expensive either. Mine look slightly extraterrestrial, but i'm sure you can find plain black ones too.

I looked at those kinds of gloves, but I think they're more for better grip than protection.
