Wiring Basics for a rookie
« on: October 23, 2012, 11:13:22 AM »
Removed an aftermarket set of turn signals on my 78 CB750F that had two wires running into them. I assume one wire was for the signal and the other kept the light on like running lights.

The bar end mount signals I installed only had one wire and are used as signals. The bars I used are black powdercoated so until I ground down the paint under the mounts and the paint inside the bars where the signal contacted, I couldn't get them to work . Now that I have them grounded and working, I am blowing the main 15amp fuse and can't figure out why?

The signals work great with the motor not running but as soon as I start the bike and hit the signal, she shuts down...

Any suggestions for a rookie?

Check the FAQs for good basic discussions on bike electrics. So that you don't burn thru a paycheck buying fuses. Clip a 12v light bulb across the fuse holder with the fuse removed. The bulb will shine bright if there is an active short. With the bulb in place, key on, kill off - start wiggling wires until you find the one that makes the bulb change brightness. You may need to turn the signal switch on and off too.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.
