CB750 K5 in Michigan
« on: October 15, 2012, 08:48:55 AM »
Hello All,

I just picked up my first CB750 this last weekend.  My wife had a CB650 and sold it last spring.  I did a lot of work on that bike and wish I joined this forum then.  I've both restored and built custom xs650s and have always wanted to try a CB750.
So, here she is a 75 K5 model.  Pretty crusty, but within my budget.  Paid $350 with a title.  The engine appears to have compression, but I haven't had a chance to check the numbers yet.  She hasn't been on the road since 1987.  It needs a lot, the previous owner sold off a few parts.  From what I can tell it's missing turn signals, headlight ring (I have a bucket and extra bulb), gauges, starter gear, side covers, petcock, gas cap, The tank is dent free but there's some pretty heavy rust under it, I have a stock seat that just needs a new cover.  The more I get into it, the more I'll find.

I've already started reading a lot on this forum.  I know it's better to search and read first and ask questions if need be.  I belong to xs650.com and it always annoys me when someone asks the question that's been asked and answered 100 times.  Of course, my next step is to buy a good book.

I plan to do a full frame off restore.  From powder coating the frame, too inspecting every bolt and bearing.  As always, I can only work as fast as my budget will allow.

looks like a solid start to a challenging project.  Welcome from another MI member...and I can probably scrounge up most of the turn signal stuff.  I think I may be missing extra correct rear stalks.  Also, you will need the grab bar.  I don't think I have anything else on your list right now.
If it works good, it looks good...

Hey grepper,

Over on this side of the state there have been a few CL ads lately that might get you a good chunk of your parts list.  I know it's a PITA to head over this way, but if you happen to be over here it'd be worth looking into- particularly the guy in Troy.  Met him recently and had a good time checking out his bikes.

Best of luck on your project.

Thanks for the support guys.  Unfortunately i won’t be buying any parts right away, tight on cash till we sell our old house.  I've been watching craigslist and have seen people selling parts, plus a lot here.  At this point I'm educating myself before I start turning wrenches.  Plus I already have an xs650 Chopper in peices to work on.

BTW:  I grew up in Troy, but have live all over lower MI.  Picking up parts in the Detroit area is not a problem, most of my family still live in the northern suburbs.

Welcome, good deal for $350.  You may want to reconsider if you plan on tearing the engine apart, they have been known to go 100K without a rebuild.  Even if the compression numbers are a littleclow, they may come up after some run time.
A lot of guys attempt a start up to know what you have when buying a non-runner.

Good luck
