Dunlop K70 tires
« on: October 21, 2012, 07:23:56 PM »
Getting ready to put tires on my 750 and leaning toward the Dunlop K70's. Looking for opinions.

Here are my parameters...

Most important thing is a tire that grips well in wet or dry.

Next thing would be decent mileage.

Lastly, don't want to overspend but I'm not interested in a cheap tire.

I run Dunlop 404 on both my 750's. Good tires at a decent price.

Dunlop GT 501 I think I have on mine, very pleased with them. Many uses them over here.

I have K70's on my 550 and love them..They are new, so I don't know about the mileage yet. Haven't had them in the rain yet, but I'm sure they will be fine as they were fine 40 years ago.

I have 404's on my 750, and they are fine also. About 6,000 on the rear and maybe 10,000 on the front before it's time to replace.

If I could, I'd put k70's on my 750, but it's a K8, so that's out for the rear. I would prefer to match the original inch profile tires rather than metric if possible.

It's pretty much a personal choice.

I think Mark mentioned the Avon Roadriders are made in inch sizes and everyone that has them likes them.

Last year I finished off a set of K70's that I picked up used from a friend, they were about 8 years old.

I had no complaints about them, other than it only took me about 5k miles to polish them the rest of the way off, haha.

I ride in all kinds of weather, and the K70's had good wet weather traction, even towards the end of their service life.

I replaced them with road riders, and don't know that I'll go back to Dunlop anytime soon.  I'm putting Bridgestone BT45's on my K3, we'll see how I like those compared to the road riders.

Truth is I am interested in the vintage look. Forgot to list that as a parameter.

Sounds like the k70's might be a winner. I've got the 404's on a Kawasaki Concours and like them but I'd hate to use a modern looking tire on a 1974 bike.

You can't get K70's in sizes for the stock CB400F rim, but an eastern European company named Mitas make a knockoff that has the same tread pattern. I know the rubber compounds will be different to the Dunlops I'm sure, but I love them.

I get the vintage look and can lean the bike so far over the exhaust collector scrapes the ground (which scared the pants off me). Where I live the roads aren't perfect, but I've never found myself wanting for grip.

Apples and oranges I know, but I can vouch for the tread pattern at least!

Rick.

Back in the 70s, Continentals were one of the best tires going. They are still making the same tread pattern and are available in inch sizes.

Rick, You might be interested to know that the April '12 edition of ClassicBike magazine (the one with the 400f/James May on the cover) gave the Mitas rubber a good write up.  I've ordered some for my hoops.
