Blinkers don't blinks
« on: October 22, 2012, 02:29:39 PM »
Searched other posts, older posts, still don't blinks.

Bike is 1975cb550

Tested my blinker relay on other bikes, blinks fine. Tried other blinkers, don't blinks.

Traced wires back, checked against wiring diagram, nothing seems out of ordinary.

Bulbs use on bike 1073 and 1034

All contacts are cleaned prior to installing wiring harness.

All other electrical functions are fine.

Need ideas troubleshooting this

Thanks

+1

You can just remove the screws (on the switches) and carefully pull them apart just enough to spray some WD-40 or contact cleaner in there.
Blow out with compressed air.  Move the switch back and forth several times.   Repeat.   That should do it.    You'd be suprised how many times I've pulled spider nests etc out of those dang things.  The WD-40 will remove any moisture and actually does a pretty good job loosening things up.   The air will get rid of any junk.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Thanks guys. I'll be damn if this works. :) I looked in there also, and contacts look clean with silver-ish grease on it.

You need a multi meter and a wiring diagram.
If you have dual filament bulbs they should be 1157"s.

Got both meter and diagram. Rear use single and front use dual filaments. Also tried with 1157.

Battery ground to the frame? I'll double check that.

But all lights work though.

have you tried new bulbs. sometimes they blow and look like they are good. or go through your wiring and check all connections.

Bulbs are good. Turn on left signal, solid light. Turn on right signal, solid light.

Just did continuity test at the headlight buckrt, per manual, gray to light blue, gray to orange, got readings of 4.

Still no blinks

How charged is your battery, had a dead battery on my kz when I bought it. I put it on the charger for a few hours so I could check all the electrics, it wouldn't hold a full when I hooked it up. It powered up the system, all the lights lit up, horn beeped, starter turned over slowly. The only thing that didn't work fully was the turn signals, they lit up but didn't blink untill I put a new battery with a full charge on it in.

I'm using battery jumper, which is fully charged. Tried this on my other bikes and they blink fine.

Check that where your relay is plugged in that that is recieving correct current as compared to other bikes. I'm for sure but I believe the relays for the blinkers in these bikes work just as in cars where they have to have enough current to create enough heat so switch the lights.

+1  Check all of the wires going to your winker, but pay special attention to the ground.  Clean it, and make sure it's plugged into the right spade.

Try a ll552 flasher or something like that. Its like 4$ from autozone and it worked for me. I diligently cleaned and lubed the lefthand switch but alas it didnt work for me. Same problem as you, solid light and no flash. That flasher change and i have a working system now

Are you using LED replacement bulbs? They do not draw enough current to make the old bi-metal strip flasher cans work.

Remove the flasher can and set up a test rig using allagator clip test leads, known goold bulbs and bases, and a known good battery. This will test to make sure the can is doing what it should. Make sure you use bulb wattages that match what the manual says, and the SAME NUMBER of bulbs.

Old type bi-metal strip flashers have the nice advantage of indicating battery condition. Slow/no flashing indicates a low voltage condition (at the flasher can). That may be caused by an under-charged battery, or high resistance connections in the electrical circuit.

Modern "electronic" flasher cans don't use the same technology, and are built to flash at a constant rate independent of the battery voltage or connection resistances.

An electronic unit may very well cover the symptom, but not address the cause if the cause is related to battery voltage or connection resistance.
