CB400F Engine Paint
« on: October 26, 2012, 04:12:32 AM »
I put my CB400 bits into Redditch Shotblasting yesterday for a good clean up. They were quite keen to powdercoat the whole engine. I am planning to spray it myself in aluminium engine enamel to keep the cost down. When I was explaining that as standard it was all painted silver except the barrels, they said "Why weren't the barrels painted as standard?" They also said they have powdercoated the barrels in the past. So my question is, why weren't the barrels painted by Honda? Heat dispersion/just appearance?? Or am I wrong in that respect?

Cheers

Many argue that it was for better cooling.  I've never heard a definitive answer though.

I would not powder coat an engine, way too much preparation to do it properly. Plus, it theoretically could reduce cooling.  Mono is correct-at least that is what I always heard....Larry

My 400's PO painted the barrels and the paint is peeling off. Admittedly, he probably spent no more than five minutes doing surface prep. Eventually, I'll strip them completely.

This website has some great information on the original Honda paint scheme:

Personally, I had mine hydro blasted and haven't regretted it:

You don't say how they prepared the cases but their title says 'shotblasting', be very careful there are lots of horror stories about shotblasting engine cases, the grit gets everywhere including oilways, that can mean a destroyed engine, the same can go for powder coating as the powder is electrically charged and drawn to the metal, personally I would go with the spraycan and good masking.
