Differences between a 74 and 77 CB550 Engine?
« on: May 27, 2005, 11:06:05 AM »
I know there are differences between the carbs for these years. Any major differences for the engine?

I have a 77(or 78?) engine that I bought a while back. I'm troubleshooting oil leaks and pressure issues on my 74 CB550 at the moment. Anyway, I want to have a fresh engine but I'm not ready to start tearing down the 74 until I really know how bad it  is.

Any reasons why I shouldn't be able to swap these out after I rebuild the other?

Thanks,
Brian

You should have no fitment issues.  Externally they are the same.  Intake manifolds are different. So, swap them to keep the 74 parts together.

There's only a couple of thing different internally, as well.  I believe the clutch stack is slightly different.  And, the cam cover was redesigned to hold the valve rocker shafts tight on the 77.

sweeeet. Hell the other one may not even need to be rebuilt. Oh wait, the idea is to have a fresh motor ;)

The only parts that CANT be switched from motor to motor are the inlet manifolds with rubbers and carbs EVERYTHING else will fit
