« on: October 26, 2012, 01:26:22 PM »
Anyone know the torque specs for the rod bolts on RC steel rods?? Well, they may not actually be made by RC but the leters "RC" are stamped on them.

Okay members, i'm still in need of help in determining the proper torque specs for my rods. I lost my cheat sheet from the last time i rebuilt the motor so i'm now at your mercy to get me back on track. I've got to get this engine back together so i can race it with Team Sam Green at the Man Cup race in 10 days.

The rods are marked S34G on the side. RC on the big end and have .345 threads(11/32+-).

Come on now guys, give me some assistance on the torque specs for these rod bolts.

Thanks in advance

I know the chevy 283 - 327 used 11/32 rod bolts,  not sure if the torque spec would work for you.  Those almost look like an ARP bolt.  In an old RC catalog I have it states there upgraded steel rods were upgraded with 11/32" automotive rod bolts.

Thanks a lot for that answer. It should put me on the right track just in case no one else has any other response. Good to know its an upgraded rod bolt also. I can't afford the Carillos or Falicons so these old rods will have to continue to work for me.

Looks like its 40 ft-lbs according to the research i did on the 11/32" ARP rod bolts.

Thanks again CBR954.

I just checked the RC catalog and there are no torque specs, they do say that they use 11/32-inch high tensile automotive bolts and that they are 4 times stronger than stock..... ;)

My research on that size bolt netted a torque spec of 40ft-lbs. So thats what i used when i built the motor last time.

I have a set of these rods also but I am hesitant to use them in a big motor, they are after all still modified stock rods, but the price of Carrillos scares me  :o   Just wondering what they would hold up too.  I may give the a shot in one of my motors if I cant find the funds for some Carrillos.

My set were used in a 10 second 750 drag bike running on methanol, and i'm still not sure if I want to use them again.... CycleX has some pretty decent rods for around $599, a bit cheaper than Carrillo's... ;)  I think APE now sell these as well...

I have a set of the Super Rods in a 970 street motor,  I do like the looks of them but no one will say what they can handle for HP either,  I know the Carrillo's are top of the line but so is the price.  But if I can swing them then there would be no question whether the bottom end is gonna last.  Just the green stuff $$$$ is hard to come by right now for two motors!  We will see.

I've been 10's with those  RC rods in my 1030. I keep the bearings fresh and have run this setup for over 18 years now racing the bike almost every weekend for a while.  I launch the bike around 8,000 and my shift point is set at 10,000 a  I suppose regular maintenance is key to anything lasting. Or maybe I'm just lucky. Bottom line, I wouldn't hesitate to use them in another 1000 plus cc motor.

The RC rods I have came out of a 1000cc drag motor but I dont know there history of the motor, another reason I am unsure whether to use them. Still contemplating....   Dragracer...when you find some bolts to fit your rods let me know what they are in case I decide to use my RC rods.

I ran those RC rods in first a street hot rod then a turbo motor, no problems with winging the crap out of them, not even when I detonated a piston to death. These rods didn't turn into little 'S' shapes or make a hasty exit through the case.
After a long hard life they went to another motor so I had them worked over. They were strait, and the worst big end was .0015 out. They were easily re-sized at an automotive machine shop. The wrist pin bushings had negligible wear.
