Reorganization!

The shelf I ordered from Sears finally came in. Got it put in place tonight.

Most of the parts are up off the floor. Gives me a bit more room to move around.

Parts parts and more parts!

Fresh batch out of the vinegar bath. Scrubbed and doused in WD40.

Hopefully this makes working in my "phone booth" shop a bit easier. ha

Thats crazy money... A local place here did all my 550 parts, stripped fixed the ears I cut off and PC bengal silver for 225 or 250...

Wow I wish. I got quotes to get all the parts blasted only for around $300... still steep but I think I'm going to go that route and just do a good old fashioned rattle can job.

Around here there is a lot of heavy industrial because of the mining industry so I think that is what is driving the prices up. No shortage of work. I had to play phone tag with one shop for a week before he would even give me a quote.

my wifes hates any smells like paint/kero/gasoline etc,,it makes her sick!

Yes my gf also gets headaches from certain smells so I've been trying to be very careful with getting things clean before I bring them in and watching what chemicals I use. Simple green seems to take care of a lot of smells including gasoline of of metal parts.

I will probably have to send her away for a few hours while I paint.

Many local joints definitely have the " they need us worse than we need them" attitude. With proper prepping,
conventional paint can also be attractive and durable.

Same thing here up in northern Alberta...too much oil money and industry. Guys will pay too much for mediocre quality work, which drives it up for the rest of us. You can get an OK (10/10 job....10 ft 10mph looks ok) job from rattle can paints, but you also need the room to spray...need to be able to hang your frame, swingarm, etc...need to be able to maneuver around it freely and should have a good vent point (inlet/outlet combo to control overspray, esp in a multi residential building. Powder coating is all right, but you won't get the same level of finish that you will with a good quality paint. If you have the time, find out where the "enthusiast" body shops are in...(sorry, man...Regina or Saskatoon??). Let them know what you're doing and that you'd like to learn, if possible. You can do all the stripping easily with a good quality industrial grade aircraft stripper (Mar-Hyde), but again, the off gassing is an issue and this is best done in a buddy's garage. Follow it up with sanding (orbital if possible) 120-220-320 ish (getting ahead here...this presumes that you don't have heavy amounts of rust pitting in your components). Any areas that you're concerned about rust removal, work it out with a wire wheel. You can do wonders with a bit of elbow grease. Most of the cost of body work is in the prep time. Sorry for the long post here....my 2 cents...if it were my Dad's machine (wish he would have kept some of his stuff from back in the day...61 galaxy convertible, 63 pontiac convertible, 65 pontiac hardtop) I'd save the cash and get it done properly....no sense regretting a mediocre finish. Well I haven't updated in a while cause not much has happened. I sent off a whole bunch of parts to be sandblasted which are supposed to be done by Wednesday is the hope. I will likely pay more for my media blasting only what some of you guys in the states would pay for blasting and coating. Arg!

I have decided to go ahead with spray cans... where will I spray this thing you might ask? To answer that I built this:

I will probably hang more plastic on the front and move the whole unit more unto the middle of the room so I can flip up either side to get at both sides. That's the plan anyway. I will have the window fan cranking on exhaust the entire time to hopefully create a negative pressure in the room and draw from under the door and expel it out the window. Hopefully this will keep the smells at bay. Hopefully.

The zinc plating kit I ordered showed up as well.

A very thorough manual explaining all their plating processes (not just zinc).

Kit includes a couple pails, 2 zinc anodes, powder to make degreaser solution, powder to make electrolyte, zinc brightener, and I also ordered black chromate (the 2 bottles on the side) which allows you to dye parts black and also gives even better oxidation protection.

Kit also includes a pump which I haven't quite figured out if it's supposed to be fully submersible.

I also ordered a heater with a built in thermostat ... but they sent me a different heater with no thermostat. I got in touch with them and they said ship it back and it will be exchanged for the proper one and they will cover shipping. So I guess it's good they are handling it well but I'm out a bit of time. Oh well.

A midst all the chaos the little motor sits off in the corner in front of said window fan. I would have liked to have torn into it already but I just feel like it's way too chaotic in there right now. I'm hoping to get the painting done first, take down the "booth", and then I'll have some more space to put stuff.

Parts should start showing up from my huge parts order this week as well from various corners of the world. Pretty exciting.

Oh ya, I'm in Saskatoon by the way and thanks for the advice. Glad I'm not the only one suffering through over inflated industries.

New variable DC 0-5A constant current or constant voltage power supply.

Givin 'er a good test.

Should work well for my plating needs I believe.

My orders showed up from CMSNL and Service Honda today as well. That was fricken fast shipping from Europe!

A bunch o' parts from Service Honda.

I spy a horn, a tool pouch, battery strap, axle tensioner nuts, oil tank crush washer, tach drive screw, speedo drive screw, rear turn signal mount bolt, etc.

Here I see both genuine levers and bolts for each, air box seal, airbox wingnuts, fork cover (ear) mounting rubbers, gas filler seal, front brake piston seal and bleeder cover, etc

Carb insulators and airbox velocity stacks with the bolts for the clamps. (I looked at buying new clamps but they were fricken expensive for whatever reason.)

Upper and lower brake hoses, swing arm bushings and felts.

And from CMSNL we have 1 huge box containing nothing but 2 gas tank chrome strips and a bunch of shredded cardboard for protection. They really care about packing things correctly at CMSNL if anyone is wondering.

Full cable kit from CMSNL and you can also see the new fork tubes which are in bubble wrap, within a cardboard tube, and then within another box.

A few more bits from CMSNL... lower shock mount bushings, upper shock rubbers, battery box rubber mounts, a carb screw kit (which doesn't have the screw I need!), a throttle sleeve, etc.

So as you can see I'm pretty stocked up for the up coming rebuilt. I gotta get these parts back from the sandblaster and go to town on the painting so I can start putting sh!t back together! Then I have to tear into the motor, get it all cleaned up, and send some stuff away for machining, etc. It's getting hectic around here!

Random question... anyone know where I can find 1 single carb drain screw? I somehow lost one.

Check the classifieds for a carburetor thread from elan. If you can't find it locally/go unoriginal then hes a good bet bc hes a recent post. Fast shipping I like the guy

One thing i would recommend though is that you replace the rear shoes. On my build I replaced the necessary evils for the most part and one of them was definitely the rear shoes. I have seen warnings on here and not many with actual backup as for what happens when rear shoes are old but on cars I have seen two examples personally and I'm only 21. I'm not sure why the bond doesn't hold up as well(at that point I was transferring from mech eng. lol) but it really doesn't so I would say scrap them

I have ebc shoes on mine and though they needed sanding for fitting the hub the suckers work good. They will be tight and really need some material in some places worn down( not only my experience) but damn those suckers work good and don't make much noise

Curious to see how your zinc plating works out for you. Is that the 1.5gal kit? Take lots of pics before and after if you can! I just placed an order for one too but they are out of blue/clear chromate so it won't ship for a few weeks they said.
