Well guys I was hoping to rejet the bike this weekend but all it did was rrrraaaaiiinnnnnnn. Pretty sure we had around 3" of rain over the weekend. Arg. Sucks not having a garage.

Anyway, I hung out with the gf and helped her out around the house. She is doing well and on the road to recover.

Well it stopped raining this evening long enough for me to get out and do some tuning.

First I tried:

-120mains
-Re-torqued exhaust fasteners and added blue loctite
-Inspected needle/seat ... found that the bowl that is leaking has some marking on the seat that are probably the cause of the leak
-Used a couple dabs of crazy glue while the carbs were off to glue the bowl gaskets to the carb bodies ... SO MUCH BETTER for pulling bowls off while on the bike

Went for a ride and my top end bog was much worse. It started to sputter and cough at anything past 3/4 throttle... hmmm so maybe my analysis of thinking my bike was lean was incorrect ... or did I overshoot and 115 was the sweet spot ... hmmm

Then I tried:
-105mains ... it was either that or try 115s .... couldn't decide how big of a step I needed to take

Went for a ride and it immediately felt better in mid range and top end ... but then suddenly it started running crappy. Like it was running on 3 cylinders ...but only at 1/2 throttle and above. WHAT THE HECK!

Opened it up again:
-Dumped out the #3 fuel bowl and the main came out with it... lol that would explain. I tightened the jet holder into the carb body but forgot to tighten the jet into the jet holder. Oops!

Went for a ride again and my initial reaction was confirmed. A stronger mid range and little or no bogging up top.

This has me a big confused. I thought my CX-1 cam would require, if anything, larger jets. Hmmmm

At the same time I'm also relieved to know I was running rich as opposed to lean during break in.

absolutely.rich is safer . intersting about the smaller jets . ...if the flot hieghts are right ,then maybe it has  a more restrictive aftermarket air filter , or chokes slightly on ?

Sounds like you are getting it sorted out.  I agree, richer is better.

Well I guess 105 mains is actually stock for this year of bike. I just thought that with the step up in cam and superflow valves that I might need a bit more jetting. Seems like if anything I could go even go down another step. I did mess around a bit with the idle mixture again and it seems with the smaller mains I was able to come down on the idle mixture as well. Only at 1 turn out now. I need to mark my throttle with tape so I can do some proper throttle response testing.

I need to do some plug chops to confirm mixture but I'm still only at 170miles or so on the engine break in. How long do you guys think I should wait until I wind her out to 7k or 8k? I've been holding it to 6k or below so far.

Different schools of thought on engine break in. Definitely dino oil and I am of the camp to not keep it at one speed for more than a few minutes and don't baby it too much but don't wot until you have some miles. I would be pushing it up to 7-8 k now, or higher. Just no redline excursions.

I was following the advice of Dave500 to keep it under 6k and try not to lug at low RPMs either. So far I have changed the oil at 30miles and at 140miles (110mile interval). My plan is to change again around 300miles (160mile interval) and then again at 500 (200 mile interval). This seems like a reasonable plan to me. I have been using new filters each time and using non-synthetic motorcycle oil.

I have another question regarding rubber tipped float neeldes. I've heard of them and sounds like they would probably work better than metal on metal type... however I don't know where to get them? Are rubber floats the OEM part or are they only available on certain years?

Went for a nice ride last night. Got a bit of highway time in. The 105s are much better on the highway. However, I think when I'm able to rev it out I will do a plug chop just to see. I'm betting I will find that it is still a touch rich.

Also, my tach decided to start fluttering again ... which is really annoying. It had stopped doing it for a while but now it's back. Seems to act up once it's sat for a while.

And I'm just over 200 miles total on the rebuild now. woohoo!

Talked to the shop this morning and apparently they are back from the custom decal shop and have color. They are waiting for clear now. I was also told that their paint booth goes down every time it rains ... which lately has been A LOT. wtf

Anyway, hopefully that is actually true and I will get them soon.

Dude, you need a scorched earth response with this shop. Build a web page to advertise for the quality (lack there of) service they provided for you this nightmare on the bike. The multiple __ups, and the whole dirty story illustrated with photos.
Wouldn't pay them a dime. They want to push it then have them pursue it in the courts.
You have been very patient and forgiving of the delays it seems from my perspective. That time is over.
Word of mouth as well.

With some shipping you have several guys on these forums who do paint work and do a very nice job. Plus they are reliable and know what they are doing and won't have your tank and side covers forever like this shop has. Tweakin and Branden have had some very nice paint work done by a member.

This is to much. What the f*ck it's in the middle of the riding season and the keep on screwing up.
As earlier advised, find another shop.

And post some pictures on the tank anyhow !

i refrained from typing swear words,,i think everyone here knows how much i can swear,but #$%*?post some pictures man,,thats just such a bad experience for you right from the get go,now it all has to be stripped again?dont settle for second best,,you know what you ordered and thats exactly what you should recieve,thats just such a dissapointment,,just take the tank and dont pay,,take your big friend along aswell,tell them to just #$%* right off!!

I feel your pain.  My 77CB750K project has run into more speedbumps due to flakey or "uprofessional" professionals that I can shake a stick at.  One professional never lined the tank before sending it to paint.  After I acquire a replacement tank, my painter flaked for nearly a year in completing body filler, block sanding a painting, before being evicted from his shop.  I now have a new painter.

As for your painter, if you've paid money, I would either demand that s/he fix the screw up and get it done within a week.  If you haven't paid or have completely lost faith in the painter, pick up your tank and go; if that means you are out money, sue them in small claims.

No #$%*. This is to the point where you get your tank and side covers back. Demand a refund first. Then take them and walk out.

Curious, how much they charge you?

You may be to the point to buy a nice set off ebay. Find a reputable painter. Get work painted and sell the set you don't need.

I'm very sick of their #$%*. And no, they don't really deserve anymore chances. The whole situation is just upsetting.

On a positive note, the bike is running pretty well and I'm able to ride it right now. I've got about 235 miles on since the rebuild as of 2nite. The bike seemed to like the cooler weather 2nite so I'm wondering if I'm still rich at WOT yet.


Don't do crazy things with my license plate number plz. lol




The tank just isn't doing the rest of the bike justice but the rest of it is lookin real nice.

I did notice that my front caliper is still seeping. I went out and bought a small brass wire wheel so my next plan of attack is to try and clean out the seal groove really well. The piston and seal are OEM and brand new!

I also noticed that my my fuel leak from #2 bowl gasket has stopped. I glued the gaskets to the carb bodies and that seemed to relly help keep them in place better. I also cleaned out my needle valve and seat so I must have got a bit of dirt out or something.

I took the bike up to 90mph on a lonely road 2nite. That's about 6300RPM according to my tach so I pushed my 6k limit by a little bit but it was worth it. lol The bike seems to like it when I ease into the throttle near WOT instead of snapping it wide open all of a sudden. I think that means I still rich. Also, when you snap it wide open the sound changes distinctly. The sound really flattens out and kind of sounds like its bogging a bit still.

There is a nice long hill about 30min from town that I am going to ride out to next weekend and try to do a plug chop. I think the hill is steep enough that it should keep the RPMs down.
