Perhaps the salt in the dishwasher afected the surface of the cases ?

NO,

In regards to the machine shop's treatment of your broken stud.  They should not have left you with burrs.  The burrs could very well be a product of the removal process, but so should have been the removal of those burrs in a way that didn't compromise the matting surfaces.  Even if the shop you went to didn't know jack about engines, ANY machine shop SHOULD know about mating surfaces and that burrs are unacceptable.

Careful with that dremel, it's very easy to create depressions in aluminum.  I'm not an expert in engine mating surfaces so I won't comment further on how to proceed, but if you do a specific search or posted specifically, you'd get an answer I'm sure.

Good work, and good luck!

Yes I realize it's not how it should have been done. I'm not happy with their work, their price, or how long they took to do the work. It's not worth fighting them though. They just won't be getting my business in the future.

I used a little sand paper disc on the dremel that is flexible. I thought this would be best since the flexible nature of it would tend to only take the high spots down. You'll note I just touched them up and removed the high spots and left the little impressions. Fortunately this is the base gasket area and not the head gasket surface. I will probably just put a touch of sealer on that area before I put the cylinders back on. I think it will be OK.

I think it was mostly the high heat of the drying cycle in the dishwasher that affected my parts. I wanted the high heat though to cure the paint somewhat. (I tried using the oven with some other parts and the smells got me in a lot of trouble ... ha).

The foam on mine is in fine shape and the leather is ok too. It's everything else. I'm leaning towards just reaching deep into the pockets and gettin a new one. ha

I dont' have to really decide for another month or so. It's not like the seat really holds up the build. lol

The weekend started off well: Cycle X parts showed up! Or at least some of them... Apparently they shipped 2 boxes but for some reason shipped one Fedex and one USPS... I don't get it but oh well.

Sweeeeet. Everything was packaged well...

In this! All packaged up in the crate I sent to them plus extra padding.

Nicely refreshed head. It was glass beaded, surfaced top and bottom, new guides pressed in and reamed, superflow valves installed w/valve job, new springs, and titanium retainers.

Lookin fresh!

Doesn't get much cleaner than that.

Cylinders also glass beaded and surfaced, bored +.25mm, and honed to finish size.

Lovely.

Balanced crank. They said it was out 6g and now it bang on. Balanced out as nicely as their drag bike he told me. Cool!

I also had them pull the ball bearing plugs out and clean the oil passages then retap the hole for NPT plugs.

I can read the letters on my crank now. Doesn't really matter at this point but just neat to see.

Sent my rods back all packaged up. He didn't do anything with them but I thought he might need them to balance the crank... guess not!

My degree wheel and some sealant.

Super gasket kit.

All the seals and o-rings.

Looks like he stamped my initials in the cylinders and heat. Pretty neat.

Put a helicoil in near the cam chain tensioner hole.

A view of the new guides lookin purdy.

Then I spent several hours going over everything with varsol, a rag, and a screwdriver. Then I painstakingly taped everything. This took way longer than I imagined... as usual.

You'll note I'm repainting the MC and a couple covers. I wasn't happy with their finish the first time.

Ran to the hardware store and picked up an extra paint just in case. Figured I wouldn't need it but then when I got back I noticed that one of the ones I had already was the wrong color! I do have a little bit of luck! lol

Hardware store spoils... I treated myself to the T handle allen wrenches since I've got the allen head bolt kit on the way.

I re-murderized the room one lats time (hopefully).

After the first coat.

Last coat and it's looking better than it did the first time. Woot!

Hopefully I got all the nooks and crannies... there are a lot of them!

Well I was hoping I would get all my Cycle X stuff before this weekend and was hoping to get my DSS stuff but I guess not. Oh well, I'm pretty certain I'll have it before next weekend.  have a few things I can keep on working away at in the mean time anyway.

Please ! Take a look and give me feedback in my project thread, its much needed :)

lol WTF Dave?

I didn't clear any of my parts. I've only heard bad things about clear slowly yellowing with heat. We'll see how the Duplicolor holds up without it. I just sanded with 320 and painted again on the MC and stator cover. There were some imperfections that I wasn't happen with ... however upon sanding I discovered they were actually casting defects and not paint defects. ha

I threw the cylinders, head, and valve cover on the cases this morning (just set them on).... it's gonna look good! Pics to come later perhaps.

Chipped away at some things today. Seems like I kind of got sidetracked and just did little things but they needed to be done nonetheless.

Started off by pulling all the plastic down again and cleaning everything. I hate throwing all that plastic out. Such a waste...

Finally found the right hardware to install my new horn. Small job... but needed doing. lol

I went crazy with the anti-seize and basically took out all the bolts I've installed up until this point and add anti-seize. Only really needed these tools. Beauty of a Honda.

Got the rear fender and new grab bar/tail lights on. Really started look more like a bike with this on. note the convenient flash to block out my plate number. lol Not really sure why this is a big deal anyway?

My freshly painted head and cylinders. Matches up nicely with the valve cover that was painted a couple weeks ago so that's a good sign.

Then I tackled some electrical work. Replacing a #$%*ty plug end, adding some bullet connectors that got cut off, etc.

Fresh male bullet connectors for my front signals.

I crimped and soldered them.

Replaced this crapped plug off of my ignition switch. Just making note of the color pattern.

A tip I figured out... these little spade connectors (I think that's what they are called?) work perfect for pushing the little tang down so you can pop the connectors out.

Looks like this.

Ignition switch with a fresh plug.

Threw on my new brake and clutch handle. Although I broke my clutch switch in the process.... can I just "jump" the clutch switch so the safety starter unit thinks it is depressed?

So took a few hours to get this stuff down but didn't look like much progress when I was done. Oh well.

good work iron, keep it up. I am still alive, got all parts primed except my tank, working on bondo'ing a few dents, hoping to prime tonight. I am just too lazy to post an update yet. its such a royal pain on this slow computer. transfer files, upload files, embed files. can't wait to see more, the engine is looking good!

The plan for taking it out of the apart is to pull the entire front end off via the stem nut. That should drop a lot of weight. I will also remove the rear wheel w/ swingarm and shocks as one piece and probably pull the rear fender off too just to save some length. The exhaust will obviously be off too.

So will have 3 major sections to carry down: engine/frame, complete front-end, and rear wheel & swingarm... then some misc parts to put on like exhaust, battery, seat, etc etc etc. Engine and frame will be the heaviest/most awkward but I think that's probably 200-250lb of the bike so it should be manageable with 2 or 3 guys.

I'm also considering strapping the frame to a 2x4 frame of sorts and then we could just "skid" it down the stairs... or ski it. lol

What stage is the headwork?  what I mean is did they do any porting on just clean and put in new larger valves. It looks like they left quite a bit of material around the guides. Great build btw!

No porting. Just superflow valves (stock size). I'm just going with a mild cam so I think it will be a nice fit. Mostly stock with a bit of pep.
