As another comment to the above... I really didn't have the heart to start boring out and porting my dad's old bike. I want to be able to go back to pure stock if the desire ever strikes. My next build will have to be some POS that I have no emotional ties to and I'll customize the hell out of it! lol

Made some notable progress again today (it's "family day" here today... woot!). Pretty stoked about it actually.

Started looking into the headlight that I have in box... found out I only have the headlight and ring and don't have another bucket like I thought I did... hmmm

My bucket is in kind of rough shape...

I think this was my handywork from 15ish years ago. My dad and I had to put a new headlight bucket on since the bike came with a windjammer fairing. I may try to cut the hole a bit nicer and fill it with some aluminum sheet painted black.

The mounting grommets were too wide and made the headlight ears stick out at an angle.

So I cut them up.

Still too thick.

Shaved em down a bit more and it mounts up nice. I wasn't running any rubber grommets before just bolted straight through the square hole in the plastic.  :o

Threw the headlight in just for #$%*s and giggles.

Sweeeeet, The familiar face of a CB750.

But had to pull it back out anyway. I installed the turn signal buzzer.

Threw the tank on just because. CooL!  8)

Now on to some wiring... my Oregon Motorcycle Parts regulator had a different plug so I had to transfer this plug to the new harness.

I always make a HUGE mess during electrical!

On my old harness there is a jumper wire between the brown/white and red/brown... is this normal?

And because I said I would ... some pics of my engine just set together.

Gonna look mighty fine I believe.

An ingenious device I used to clean out my handlebars. I ziptied a scotchbrite pad to my old speed cable.

I left them soaking in my parts washer to hopefully loosen up the crud on the inside. I had a HELL of a time getting the old control wires out of the  bars so I was really dreading attempting to get them back through again. It was literally keeping me up at night thinking about it...  ::)

That worked ok but then I figured if I hooked up a wire to the other side I could pull it back and worth and really get the cleaning action going.

Well it must have worked because the first control slid in no problem.

The right hand control has a larger bundle of wires and took some manipulating but really wasn't that bad. Success!

Then I had a setback... spilled all of my drill bits on the floor. wah  >:(

#$%*ty pic but the bike is starting to look like a bike!

Threw on the M/C, the throttle sleeve, and the grips and adjusted the angle of the bars. Looks awesome! I could have put the upper brake hose on and throttle cables but thought it would be easier if I ever want to take the bars off again to just leave it.

Then I got at er and ran a tap through almost every hole in my upper and lower cases. Lubed up with WD-40. I even went so far as to power them with my drill ... though I wouldn't recommend this. You have to be VERY careful not to cross thread and come to the bottom of the hole real easy or you could wreck a thread very quickly. I didn't wreck anything though. lol

Shuttin down for the night.

Well I'm actually getting to the end of the stuff that I can do until I get more engine parts from Cycle X or get my rims, spokes, and other goodies from DSS. I'm quite pleased with the results of my efforts this weekend.

Great progress so far. The paint work on the tank and side covers will be the last for me but not the least of importance.  In the eye of the beholder the color sets off the vision of the builder, but the heart of the bike is in the mechanics..................Gary

Damn you custom painters out of my grasp! lol

I'm starting to feel like I should re-paint it the color that it is now (like my Dad original did) but just add the proper center section on the tank with the correct decal and the correct emblems on the side covers. That way it will be mostly original but preserve the memories I have of it.

I also noticed that I'll probably need at least 1 new tank badge. It's chipped all to hell!

Well I may end up having to build another bike that I really go to town on the performance mods. This isn't the bike for that though.

dude no way, thats ridiculous! if you look back at how bad my tank was, I thought there was no hope in the universe for it. I used two containers of aircraft remover and klean strip inside to peel out the old coating (yours may not have an old kreem coating) and then used the full HD motorcycle Por-15 kit. it comes with 3 cleaners plus the coating. about $54. very easy to use but you have to make sure the last step before you pour in the coating is the inside is bone dry. bone dry. BONE dry. that means fire a hair dryer in it for 4-8 hours straight, and then maybe more. after that it was an easy application albeit a little messy, and don't get the coating on anything  you dont want to sand it off of. MUCH cheaper than that crazy price. the por-15 also bonds over an leftover rust in the tank so you don't have to get every little scrap out.

Ya I'll have to figure something else out. I don't think I have an old coating but I'm not sure. I'll have to have a good look. One problem is we can't find as many of the hardcore chemicals that you seem to have everywhere in the states.

I was thinking the radiator shop would tell me like $100-$150 and then it would probably be worth it to have a good quality lining done but that's a bit crazy.

Then again i mentioned elswere, i recomend to fill with agricultural molasses and water,
Does sound stupid but shure works well.
The chemical reaction with rust just removes it and does not arm metal, paint or chrome, just rust.
Here is a picture of my battery box after 2 weeks of soaking, no rust left,in all nicks and crannies, just need to etch it and it is ready for powdercoating.
And it smells like beer, non toxic ( for your small room).
Then you can coat with creem.
My 2 cents

You can soak the whole thing or just fil it up i gess.

Just remember it is not the brekfast molasses type but the agricultural one.
Phosphoric acid. It's the active ingredient and is not contained in eating form.
I got mine at a farmers coop where they sell feeds, seeds and animal food.

Well as I somewhat suspected ... my tank does have a liner in it. A failing liner. A poorly applied, failing liner. Arg.

I drained out the simple green that's been sitting in the tank all winter ... no gas smell! Some gross lookin stuff came out. I drilled out the rivits and pulled off the petcock as well. The paint is actually in OK shape.

That white stuff is actually liner that is bubbling up. I couldn't get a good picture of it but you can see the bottom of the tank is lined pretty well and then it just gets patchier as you go up the sides of the tank. Someone didn't agitate too well when they applied this liner.

That's actually solid liner down there in the bottom. The stuff in the bottom stayed nicely in tact. Everywhere else.... nope.

I didn't realize but my one badge is in really poor shape. It's got chips all over it and I think it's bent. Where does one source these badges?

And I believe this is also my handiwork from about 15 years ago. The little studs were broken off so we epoxied these things on the back...  :o wow is that ever embarassing now. I guess what can you expect from a 12 year old and a guy that couldn't fix his way out of a brown paper bag. Love my dad but fixing things was not his forte. lol

So as you can see I'm going to have to get that old liner out. I was actually hoping it would just be rusty so I could just do some electrolysis magic and all would be well ... I dont' really want to be using a large amount of acetone in the apartment. Would probably smell for days after that! Maybe I will just looking around for quotes on what it would cost to just have it cleaned out.

iron, thats definitely liner. nasty stuff, thats what mine looked like. so are you NOT allowed to have the Por-15 kit there in canada, or aicraft remover/klean strip. it actually doesnt smell TOO bad, just open a window and leave the door closed. much easier to do outside though. if you are out of options maybe sending it off to someone on the forum right across the border to help you out sounds cheaper than that other option you listed.

I'm with Cheftuskey - POR-15 is the way to go. I also use another product called 'The Works' - it's an over-the-counter bowl cleaner, and man does it ever eat rust! After blowing through two containers of the POR-15 rust remover, I had to resort to this to get the rest of the crud out of my tank. It took 6 more washings and I found hot water enhanced the effect of the bowl cleaner solution. As noted follow the directions to the letter, you only wanna do this once.

I've actually looked for "The Works" ... they sell it in Walmart in the states but not here so far as I can tell. It's actually just 20% hydrochloric acid. Nasty stuff.

Looks like they have a Canadian POR-15 distributor:

I'm not sure I want to line the tank but I do know that I want to get that old sh!tty liner out of there at the very least.

oh yes you need to get that crap out for sure. what would hold you back from lining? I'm new to this and lining seemed like a great idea (and just about the only option for the tank I have)

Get a few gallons of white vinegar at your local grocery store. Fill to the top and let soak. An easy trick is to use a pressure washer inside when flushing it out. You will be shocked how well vinegar and the PW works. Done it to my tanks. I haven't had any flash rusting either.

try to avoid lining the tank.  Tank liners have become a "last resort" option due to Ethanol added to gasoline.  Actually, not sure what Canada's Ethanol content of gasoline is right now?  The  web is full of reports of every tank liner available failing due to ethanol.  Of course, it is "the web", and these same reports contain little or no information on how well liner installation instructions were followed.  Just try to get the fuel system clean and stabilized.  Once you are regularly using the tank, it won't rust.  Maybe try and find a friend or relative that has some outdoor space where you can work on this.  Pretty much everything involved in this process is gonna be messy and stinky, if not downright explosive.
If it works good, it looks good...

I have used redcoat with no ill effects. Probably 5 years now. Its not an epoxy. Napa carries it. The last I bought there was blue.
