NOT Soon-to-be-Mine 1968 Porsche 912
« on: October 27, 2012, 02:29:54 PM »
I've been looking around for a few months for an early Porsche coupe for a project with my dad, and I'm currently negotiating for a 1968 912.  It's basically the only 911/912 bodied  Porsche I can afford, but they're actually great little cars.  Anyway, it's a little funky, but it has a solid motor, and minimal rust for what it is.  My dad bought the car years ago for $1,400, did some work to it, and later sold it to his business partner for around $4,000...It's been sitting in a garage for four years, and it should be mine in about a month's time...I'm pretty excited for a new kind of project! 8)

Congrats on the Porsche. Are you gonna modify it or keep it stock.
I've done a lot of things in my life that I'm not proud of...and the things I AM proud of, "are disgusting"

Dankeschön

Thanks It's not mine yet, but once I get it, I'll just clean it up.  This car has a strange (according to my dad) five speed that makes some noise, and he has a few four speeds sitting around, which are a better transmission.  So, we'll probably put in one of those, and start saving for suspension and motor bits...and paint.   :o

Eventually, I want an R Gruppe style car...lighter, stronger, meaner, and racier looking.

Badass!

Thanks Mono

Thanks.  I've loved them since I was a kid, and my dad's had a dozen or more since I can remember...probably two or three dozen in his lifetime.  Growing up in Los Angeles in the late sixties/early seventies he used to work on vw's, and drag race bugs with 356 motors.

Do you have a bigger picture of the Porsche in your avatar? It looks like a Dutch Porsche I know.

I think growing up in the late sixties/seventies in California was the best period and location in terms of cars, bikes, music, culture, ingenuity, technology.  So many cool things happened in Cali around that time.  I wish I had a time machine.  The only thing that you had to worry about at that time was the draft...

Yup, my dad's got some very cool stories about growing up there.

My dad had been waffling, but finally came out and said I shouldn't buy this car.  He didn't have to try too hard, so I'll save up and try for something nicer.

In the words of my dad, "That car's a dog. You wouldn't be happy driving it, and I wouldn't be happy seeing you in it."

He explained a bunch of the problems with this car (he's done a ton of work on it while he owned it, and while the current owner has).  It's basically not a car that's going to have nicer bones, no matter how much work I put into it...it's lead a hard life, and he didn't think I was going to be able to get it for a price that truly reflected the car's value.  I have to wait longer, and save more for a nicer one.

I don't if it's bad enough for the lemon tag, but it's just not going to be nice enough for me.  Before it ended up in that storage stall at my dad's shop, the current owner had stored it outside in the tiny coastal town of Bolinas for a few months, and the entire car went to sh1t.  Carbs, gas tank, interior all got inundated with moisture and required attention.  That car has had a few not-so-caring owners in its lifetime.

My dad's shop partner (separate from his business partner who owns the 912) is fully restoring a '74 911 targa that would be beautiful if he wasn't dead set on the factory color.  It's a one-year-only special order combination of Gazelle metallic (bronze metallic) over a red interior.  It's about to go in for paint, and I don't have enough cash to buy it and paint another color...but if they have trouble selling it like I think they will, I may try to jump on it.  It will have a fully rebuilt transmission on a refreshed 3.0 motor.

Here's a pic of what it'll look like when done, minus the bright red interior...and it has the awful cookie-cutter wheels.

I'd respect your Dads opinion on that.

My brother had a 911 a few years back. I remember taking a trip to visit our folks in Ft Lauderdale for Xmas. Drove non-stop from Houston, took 16 hours for 1200 miles, had to keep it under under 100 mph since we had two bicycles on a roof rack!

Yeah, he knows what he's talking about.  At first he was just kind of quiet about it, but the more he thought about it, and the more serious about it I became, he realized it was not right for me.

The car I remember riding around in most with him was a tangerine orange '72 911T.  We drove down to LA one weekend when I was 8 or 9 to see my grandparents and my aunt.  The sound that car made at 100 on I-5 was pretty magical.
