My new CB350F
« on: July 07, 2006, 07:48:34 AM »
Well, I am new to cycling, the SOHC4 Forums, and CB cycles.  You all have a lot of really great information on here, and I appreciate it!  It really helped me sort through some of my issues that I have encountered on my bike.  My CB350F story is a bit unique, as I was talking with a friend and he mentioned that his brother had an old honda in his parents barn that I could have.  I went to pick it up, and discovered it was a 1973 CB350F, in rather rough shape.  But with some minor cleanings, I have it looking decent. The PO had accidentally switched the battery terminals while charging the battery, and fried the entire electrical system. I installed a new wiring harness, rectifier, starter solenoid, and regulator, and it fired right up!  Then the usual carb peeing issues, front brake caliper issues, and tires, and I got it on the road.

I do have a question though, and perhaps I will post it on the Tech Forum since I can't find any posts concerning this, but I have a charging issue, especially at idle.  I purchased an updated voltage regulator (not the factory part, but a modified newer technology part) to try to up the voltage at idle.  I still have the issue though of after riding a while, the battery charge diminishes to the point that if I have the brake applied, the power going to the brake light will cut the engine, since there is not enough power to the ignition coils.  If anyone has a solution to this, let me know!

Good looking bike, and welcome! All I really know about the charging system on these bikes is that they won't charge below 2000 RPM or so. How old is the battery? Someone on here will tell you everything you need to know. Sorry I'm not more help.

Where does one get a wiring harness? If one needed a wiring harness? Let's say for a 1978 CB750F to pick one at randome.

Ebay pretty much has everything you need for these bikes.  I got my wiring harness off ebay for 25 bucks or so.

Excellent Machine.  The mini-multis (350 and 400) are the best ones Honda made (IMO)!  ;D

If you want to go back to the (proper) four-into-four exhaust, look up MIVV.  It's an Italian company that makes mufflers for the old bikes.  As long as you have the original header/downtubes, you can get their exhaust and weld/bolt them on for the right look.  They can be ordered via David Silver Spares from the UK or perhaps direct from MIVV themselves.

I just hate seeing an otherwise gorgeous 350F without a four-into-four.

Good luck!

I think Honda still has the 750's wiring harnesses available. I saw one on the net for $70... somewhere....

Great looking bike.

I have a green one. They sure are fun.

As to the electrical issue......

The charging systems on all these hondas do not charge much if at all below 3000 RPM.

If you have an old battery it may not hold a charge. Let us know if you do.

If you have a multimeter and can check resistance and voltage we can walk ya thru it or better yet do a search on charging issues. Its a fairly frequent topic and there is a wealth of diagnostic advice on this forum.

Wiring harnesses for some years are available reproduction from CMSL. Havent seen one for a 78 F. I have one for a 78 F if you need something off it or as a pattern. It aint the best but I don't recall it being all wacked up.

Bike looks great! I'm in the middle of rebuilding a 350F myself. Never rebuild a bike before so its a learning experience. Split the case open tomorrow! Wish me luck :)
