I dropped my helmet, now what?
« on: July 07, 2006, 07:58:41 AM »
I dropped my helmet about 25 times the past 2 years.
Faceshield is so scratched I can't see out of it,
and I need new glasses.
Now what do i DO?
peace,
michel
PS, should I be concerned about the crack near the right earhole?
Oh! there is not SUPPOSED to be an ear hole? Opps.

dropped it off a building? or just a few feet...?

most manufacturers sell replacement face shields - take it in to make sure it matches up properly, though - don't try to guess...

Have you thought about using it as a flower planter?? 8) That crack would provide good drainage. ;D

Any drop over 3 feet and its time to get a new one. Helmets are only designed to work once.

Not really. Sure they are meant to work once but a 3 foot drop does not meen much. If I drop it on the face shield, do I need a new helmet? nope. What if I drop it onto some grass? nope again.

The thing you want to do is check the shell for any cracks or DEEP scratches. If you have not of those, you are fine, after all, the inside took no impact. Now in this case since there is a crack, then I would say to get a new helmet. or if there were deep scratches, then see about getting it inspected and then if needed, replaced.

Thats what he said. So in this case I would say to replace.

Let's not get into too deep a technical discussion on this - note the high level of sarcasm in the original post - this was not a serious question, but rather I think a comment on the obvious questions people tend to ask on not only this forum, but other boards as well.

Things like - my tire needs air - what should I do?  My finger got cut off - what should I do?  I'm hungry - what should I do?

This is similar to what I was told. I was told you dump the helmet once hard to the pavement and she is junk.

Dear Einyodeler, Yes after a 3 foot drop you might want to get a new head. Helmet too, depending on the cost of said new head.

Actually... I was kinda joking as I drop it all the time and the faceshield is so scratched up I can't see
throungh it hardly.

I saw a post (on anouther site) where a guy was all upset he dropped his helmet off his seat and thought he should get it tested. First thought I had was...."18 minutes and $18,000 does not a motorcyclist make..."

Bieffe no longer makes the heltmet/shield.

Actually worked more than 20 hours this week so looks like I will invest in a new helmet
with all that extra cash on hand (before wife spends it). ;D

peace,
michel
PS I accidentally put high test petrol in my cb550, what should I do?
PS. I did replace the helmet I slid on the road at 70mph on. It must have looked funny.  Had a BIG scratch on it.
