Cb550 slow response
« on: October 29, 2012, 05:49:30 PM »
Woke up a 78 550k and it is running pretty consistantly on all fours, motor sounds nice and smooth for the most part after a warm up but the it seems to rev not as crisp as my old 550. Just seems a little more delay in the throttle response reminds me of an old man ( no offense to the elderly).  Any thoughts- havent checked the compression yet, could it just be a tired motor? has about 18k on the clock. Also havent synced carbs yet-

Others will have more (and possibly better advice) but for my 2 cents...3000 mile tuneup and make certain timing and point gap are accurate.  Also, check throttle cable play after timing/points and other 3000 mile stuff (valves, etc...)

You need to tell us what kind of air filter system and what kind of exhaust first.
Does it have an accelerator pump system?

To check the accelerator pump system remove the air filters .
With the ignition OFF engine NOT running... gas on, turn the throttle a couple times WHILE you look in the intakes with a bright LED pocket flashlight. You should see a squirt of gas from the brass spray nozzle in each carb. Check them all.

Syncing carbs will not solve this problem.
