Mine is lower back hurts in the AM and I'm usually good for the day after I get vertical. I've learned not to aggrivate it. I don't pick up my generator anymore or a transmission. I got a trolley in the shop ceiling and a chain hoist.  Ibuprofin helps most, I try to not take a lot, I know it all has side effects.

Well I went to the physio today and I can move again, still quite sore but for now I am able to walk without much of a limp, definately better than I was this morning... I could barely walk.

That's good news mate.

The physio's sorted mine out out in the end , or at least got me on the right track after the back crackers (Chiros) had a go, and the heavy duty drugs and the cortizone shots in the spine.

I remember the doc telling me that I'll just have to learn to live with it.
I took that as meaning to live with the pain but the reality was to learn to know your back.

It's a bit of a learning curve and a good one, once you know.  8)

If I was you
I'd be worried about me.

Weird thing is that you can bench press a friggin' road train but twist or turn the wrong way with a bucket of water and it's "Good night Cyril" all over again.

Good to hear the physio worked Blue, might take a couple more visits to get it right....

Yeah I'm going back on Wednesday, in regard to being tall and lean, I'm 6'2" and only 75 kg, so I guess it is inevitable that I'm going to hurt my back.

That sounds like a dream job, the tightarses around here who run shops aren't that generous though.  They seem to think they are doing you a favour if they give you your base entitlements.  There is a fella who owns a bike shop in town who has been wanting me to go work for him for some time now.  The only reason I haven't yet is because I want bikes to remain a hobby not a job.

yeah,,thats the thing,,id love to play bikes with pay,,for about six months,,then it would be just a job,,and some dumb prick wants something re done, and then another valve stinking shim job that must be done by 3 pm as the customer wants his bike back etc,,takes all the fun out of it,thats where the attention to detail goes out the window,,this is what happens when people take old bikes like ours to the shop,,its just another bike!but an old #$%*ty one?who cares he wont notice,,these old things run like #$%* anyway,,its too hard it needs a whole new bike!just try and go easy,,can you get light duties/bench work only if needed?

HAHAHAHAHA, your funny Dave, light duties, HAHAHAHA.  I'm the only mechanic in the shop of an earthworks company, we also take in quite a bit of outside work, I have been on the bosses case for an apprentice for nearly 2 years, mainly for an extra pair of hands in the shop, I don't think I will ever see one while I'm there, hell I can't even get him to get an electrician in to fix the lights.

well update.  Thursday morning went in and had a transforaminal epidural nerve block.  out patient procedure.   so far so good.  right now experience the lil bit of pain and lots general discomfort she said would be present for a couple days as the nerve block took hold of the sciatic nerve all the way from spine to toes.  She says it could last a month, 4 to 6 months, or be permanent.  She also said if i start to feel any tingling in my toes to get ahold of her asap and they would repeat the procedure to make sure they get it all.  I have a scheduled follow up in 4 weeks.  like i said, so far so good, nice to not be in the really blazing pain associated with the sciatic.  Now if they could just fix my upper back.

While I was in England my back pain settled down to the point where it was bearable and I could move around without too much trouble.  I've been back just over a week now and it has come back with a vengeance.  I had 2 1/2 days in work last week and when I went in this morning, I was there 15 Min's and my back was on fire.  I basically had to turn around and head back home.  I went to the doctors and he told me no work for a month and after an hour in his office I walked out with a refferal to the physio, which means my visits are covered on Medicare, and also a letter so I can apply for work cover and hopefully get this sorted out a bit quicker.

Yeah I know, the hardest part is when my kids want me to pick them up and I know I can't.  To make matters worse, my boss called me up last night and basically called me a liar, he even said to me he was worried about his work cover premiums not how I'm meant to pay my bills >:(

If you originally did this at work then your boss should be very careful, you have medical advice to support your claims and he has to pay compo, he has no choice.... He sounds like an arse....

It is a little tough to swallow especially after he said for me to go put a claim in with work cover yesterday morning.  I think he must have realised he will have an excess to pay on his insurance.  The only real way to hurt him, in the hip pocket.  It has just proved what I have known for years.

That's no good Blue, all the best mate. I cracked all my vertabrae from L1 to S5 and squashed some of the discs in a couple of bad parachute landings when I was in the army, but it's been recognised by Veterans Affairs and even though the VA are a bunch of tightarse public servant dickheads, I do get some compensation, in the form of paid physio and other medical services.

But even though I've got cat scans, X Rays, and lots of other proof of the injury, people still do the "So you've got the old bad back, eh", like it's some sort of dodge that I'm trying to pull. It's human nature I suppose, but disappointing nonetheless, that unless you've got a leg off, some people can't accept that you're carrying an injury. Just like your boss....... Cheers, Terry.
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

I've had that quite a bit already, not just from the boss.  If only they could feel the pain, I'm sure they would change their minds.  People raise their eyebrows and say "Oh, so you have a bad back" it is almost like it is a script.  I just can't wait till I can go back to work, this sitting around is driving me up the wall.
