How much wind is too much wind? Wind was steady 30 MPH with gusts to 40MPH.  I am near my limit I think.

I have a '99 Goldwing and crosswinds on that bike are scary. Nevada and Montana summer afternoons have shown me some doozies. The worst was in Indiana when a storm hit very suddenly and a side wind almost put my wife & me in a ditch. My 750, on the other hand, has never seemed to be a problem in winds - even 2-up. I wouldn't worry about 30mph winds on a SOHC bike - unless you've adorned it with lots of plastic.

My rule of thumb, If I have reason to question the safety of riding in any condition, wind, rain, snow, etc, then I leave the bike in the garage.  Only you know your own limits or how far you are willing to push them.  High wind can be scary so be cautious.

Last Thursday - winds were 39kph gusting to 69kph according to internet weather info..so I left on the bike for work. Came home and it felt more "dangerous" that I felt it should. I'm OK with gusts below 70kph..just take it quietly and head home by quieter - less traffic routes. I live 10km out in the country - so 100kph with a 69kph crosswind with traffic each side is more risk than I prefer. Got home..feeling quite relieved. Checked the internet - wind speed now was 60kph - gusting to 90kph!!! Phew. So...my advice - DON'T ever ride in 90kph unless you have no choice. 60kph is quite manageable and shouldn't spook you..some tacking and leaning with counter steer for the wind required.
Mark
PS: That was on my other (faired( bike - not the CB...I actually find the CB750 worse in the wind...rear end wwanders a lot in gusts. But I guess fairing design can be good or bad. I won't go on the CB750 if the wind is above 60kph.

My rag top jeep is like a sailboat in the wind. Speed over  60 miles and you have to watch for the  wind.

Its interesting reading these threads, we quite often get 50 mph winds, actually the winds were gusting to 50 mph for 2 days just last week. its quite normal.. Here are our building code wind ratings for my home state..

Quote
The new Cyclone Rating building codes are as follows:
Wind Specification:
C1 180 kph
C2 220 kph
C3 266 kph
C4 310kph

750 F1 970cc
750 Bitsa 900cc

Maybe check those swingarm bushings for looseness?

I often ride in high crosswinds, up to 60 MPH around here. They are quite common in the Spring and Fall. With the Vetter, it splits the wind, either from the front of side, and I get blown around much less than when on an open bike. The limit came one fine Spring day with 90+ MPH winds when I reached the crest of Rooney Road on Green Mountain on the way to work: I could not lean it into the wind enough to turn leftward, from whence the wind was coming! I ended up stopping, backing the bike up a bit, turned it to face the wind, then rode off again, laughing... The same day, I was walking at lunchtime to experience the then 110+ MPH winds on foot and walked up to a State Patrol car sitting on the side of the road, eating lunch, it turned out. The wind was coming to his left. I waved at him as I walked by and he opened the window (electric) to say something back, and the windshield of the car popped right out and flew into the field nearby, with his lunch! We laughed for almost 5 minutes, then I asked what he wanted to say: he'd forgotten by then.

If you ever cross Kansas in the Spring or Fall, be prepared: it can blow steadily at 60 MPH from the Northwest toward Mississippi across there. Each time you pass under a bridge on that I-70 trip, you'll change lanes! :D

2006----wife and i on way home from HogRock in Cave In Rock, Illinois.  we came up route 1 to the interstate back over the river into vincinnes, indiana.  a gust of winf sent us and our 81 GL1100 Interstate from the middle of the bridge all the way over against the guardrail at 60mph.  I got her stopped, quit shakin, looked at her and said.............when we get home all the dammed fairing stuff and saddlebags are coming off.....and they did as soon as i hit the driveway.  now my 1976 Cb750F hasnt ever done that in the wind since i put the 2 inch over tube swinger in  it and the gl1000 front end....cant wait to be able to ride her with the new kz750 mags and wider 130/80-16 rear and 110/90-19 front tires.
