rear wheel "hop" under harder braking.
« on: November 06, 2012, 02:48:03 AM »
So I have noticed under hard braking the rear wheel wants to "hop".  It will stop as soon as i release the brake. It went so far as to grab my license plate and bend it under. New tire, bearings, brakes. Is this my suspension, my shocks are pretty old?

Sounds like your rear shocks are shagged.

+1

However, it could also be your body positioning.  If you ride the tank you have very little weight on the rear wheel which can cause it lift off the ground and hop.

His rear suspension compressed alot and it caught the license plate(modified I'm assuming) that is mounted too close to his wheel.

Shocks are likely bad. Esp if they are old OEM which were bad to begin with. But...

You may have also locked the brake. Don't think it would hop if it weren't locked which means you're on the rear brake too hard.

But also, since you have new shoes, they likely aren't worn in to your drum. Try this. Loosen the axle nut just enough that the wheel is loose in the slots. Tighten up the adjuster on the brake till its locked. This will center the brake plate into the hub. There's not a lot of slop there, between the plate, axle, and hub. But there is some and we want to get it out.  Now tighten the axle back up, TIGHT. 75ftlbs. Loosen the brake adjuster to reasonable level. Now try it.

May not help. But it is the proper procedure for setting up a rear drum brake per RaceTech.

Thanks, i assumed it was shocks they are really soft. Looks like Ill get shocks sooner than planned.

Would the cycle-x shocks work fine? Im lookin to spend no more than $200.

Rebound damping has gone in the old shocks, they are now effectively pogo sticks.... ;D   CycleX shocks are cheap, you get what you pay for....

If you are willing to go up to 200 search under the left search bar about hagons

Or progressive from dcc or similar vendors

The 200$ figure can get you much better than the cheap cyclex and the like

Hrm.. what if you didn't need to stick to less than 200 bucks?

edit: Oh I see some of those Hagons are more than 200.  Was just wondering if there is a "be all end all" for old 750's.
