Vintage Gas Pump Restore
« on: November 03, 2012, 08:10:42 PM »
Any of you guys into the restoration of old gas pumps? I have done a cycle every winter for a number of years and think I may try my hand at one of these pumps to finish and place in the shop as a display piece. Here is a pic of one I am looking at and a pic of what can be done with them.

you would have a fit if you came to my area. i know of 6 of those gas pumps and older ones within a 5 mile radius of me that are sitting in old farms the neighbor a mile down the street has one that he used back in the 50's at his place on the farm. a friend of mine used to restore them.
I've done a lot of things in my life that I'm not proud of...and the things I AM proud of, "are disgusting"

Wish I was closer. Maybe I could land a couple from Kansas. Below is a nice Texaco one that would really look good in a shop.

I dig 'em, and good money can be made from restoration work if you know the right people.

I was into them for quite a while, not restoring them. I like the original stuff if it still has enough paint left.. Still got a few.. Sold a Sieberling  tiresign, and tire patch wallbox, just yesterday..

Great idea.  You should be able to find one for a couple hundred.

My street rod club used to buy junky pumps and restore one side, then cut a window into the other side, gut it and put inside  white sides and glass shelves with a light in the top. Curio cabinet! Everyone would buy a raffle ticket for them. you say curio cabinet, and the wives would buy tickets say antique pump the guys were on it.
Dang James, I may need to visit again. This time with money, a truck and a sawzall!
the guys around here told pump owners the epa was looking for them and if you have old in ground pipes or tanks you could need to do a clean-up. Great sales pich and true.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Yes Cats, post up a pic of it. In fact, I am sure there are a number of you guys that have them original and restored. How about everyone posting a pic of what you have. Sort of a nostalgia picture post. Gosh, I used these pumps back in the 70's when working at a DX station in town. Never did I think people would be collecting them and restoring them.

will do, johnie.

mine's unrestored and stuffed / overrun by our pomegranate tree, next to our boat on the side of the garage ... it's not very pretty to someone who doesn't appreciate them, but it's all there :)

Is there people willing to pay 6K+ for having one of these pumps restored, as in the TV show "American restoration"?

I suppose you would find someone willing to pay $6K for one. Those yellow ones in the pics are selling for $3500 - $4500 restored. Some of the smaller restored ones go for $1500 - $2500.

Hey Johnie. Not really into pumps but because I like milk glass and eagles have picked up a few of these White Eagle Gasoline pump toppers over the years. Have to be careful though as they are reproduced nowadays. Good luck on finding a nice project.  Eric

The furthest back Gilmore pump is a Boyle-Dayton, looks like it has the light bar, which is fairly scarce.. I have one of them.
The first pump in the pic is. Gilbert And Barker..
