Wheel Hub treatment
« on: November 04, 2012, 05:35:14 AM »
I am in the process of restoring a 750 4 K6. I have reached the stage of rebuilding the wheels and I am undecided on what to do with the wheel hubs. My choices are to clean them and leave untreated, to clear lacquer them or to paint them with aluminium wheel paint. My main concern is that they look close to original and that they are durable. Any experience with this or alternative suggestions?

After glass bead blasting, cleaning mine up and mild polishing some edges, I cleaned with acetone then tried spraying with Eastwood's clear laquer that's SUPPOSED to stick to anthing. SUPPOSED. Peeled easily unfortunately. Mine are now bare metal.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

If you have access to a glass beader, do the inner hub, tape off the outer shiny part. use scotch brite or fine steel wool to shine up the outer surfaces. When clear coating any polished metal you have to treat it with a metal prep then rinse with distilled water, see por15, works very well but prep is critical. If you polish to a high luster, I would suggest clear powder coat.
You know you've achieved perfection in design, not when you have nothing more to add, but when you have nothing left to take away.

I cleaned em up with a scotchbrit and steel wool then polished em on a buffing wheel and they turned out great, was not all that difficult. As you can see they were a bit nasty to begin with.

Thanks for that. I started today and think I will go down the polished bare metal route. I will get some pictures on once finished.
