650 Power
« on: July 07, 2006, 06:41:22 PM »
There's not much info out there regarding the 650 (especially next to the 550's and 750's).

How much power should a '79 CB650 have? I don't mean horsepower/torque numbers, I mean seat-of-your-pants feel. Should it be able to spin the back tire in 1st? Should it be able to wheely in 1st, starting at 5000rpm and cramming to WOT? Because mine can't do any of those...

I'm also currently getting around 40mpg. Where should that be? My first few tanks were getting a LOT better, more like 60 mpg.

198kg OF POWER PACKING PERFORMANCE AT A PRICE YOU CAN'T REFUSE
well according to my brochure anyway. I read somewhere that you should get 45mpg but I can't find it at the mo, no personal experience since I never tried to start mine, just pulling it to bits at the moment, hoping to the crankshaft on the bench today ;D

Back when I had my '82 650 running strong (and before I had a lot of experience riding it), I accidentally dumped the clutch when I was pulling out at a stoplight one day.

To say the least, it was hard to hold on...  It would have thrown me off the back if the pucker factor hadn't instantaniously strengthened my grip.

Now?  Not so much.  I'm still working on it  ;D  It's all about tuning my friend.

You need to talk to Terry (cb650), I believe he could give you some insight as to what you should expect out of your 650 and how to get it. Now. I'm not talking about Terry of Australia, that's a whole different deal there. Ha!Ha!Ha!............. Just Kidding, Terry of the Australian persuasion. He's more for the 750 situations. Thing about it is, all the models are covered here. Some models are covered better than others but, they're still covered. So put your questions out and try to be patient. The info's here, it's just a little slow sometimes (not always). Later on, Bill :) ;)

Just by reading what's posted already, I can see I need some work. Once I get my charging system worked out, I'll have to go through another complete tune-up to make sure I didn't miss anything obvious.

Besides the alternator, what is the first thing that usually goes wrong on a 650?

I've had a lot go wrong. Every time I fix one thing another pops up.  Most of the stuff has been relativley minor and not too bad to fix.  Great learning experience.  I'm currently working on getting the rotor swapped out and my triple tree as well.

With effort you can get the front in the air.  The 63 hp was a "factory" rating and I think It was overrated to brag the 100hp/liter mark.   My dad and then me would get 60+ mpg.  He had 2 and I have three.
