Cylinder fill is not important on a turbo or nitrous bike...scottly said that and it is true. As I said.... shortest path and best engine management is the key. I do agree that "pulses" are not important....turbo or nitrous over come them.

Finally got a chance to get back at it!





















Next step is to finish building the intake manifold plenum plate so we can build the intake manifold.  Then decide the final placement of the turbo and finish building the second half of the exhaust manifold.  After that place the intercooler, and connect the dots.   8)

Johno- Thanks I appreciate it!  115 holy crap!  It's maybe 20f here. Luckily my girlfriend bought me a torpedo heater last year for Christmas. But the kerosene fumes might be her way to slowly kill me  :-X

Greg h- Where and what did you race with?  If you have any pictures or links to a website with more info, I would love to check it out.

Did a bunch of grinding today and worked on the plenum runner plate.  Not of whole lot of need for pictures of those, so here are a few just for kicks.  I will say however, removing the inner sleeve from the exhaust manifold "bell" ends was a royal pain.... they are spot welded every little bit and made for a long day with little progress. 







Its a shame this will be covered with header wrap.  I love custom exhaust manifolds.  One of these days I will have a bunch hanging on my walls as art.

OK, MondayDad is going to comment on his own related project and present frustration.  We got 2 CB350s in case we needed some parts that we didn't have.  While the MD1 ("Must~dache 1") bike was not running when we got it, MD2 was running, albeit barely.  It had been unused for probably a year, but the fuel tank and carbs were empty so that wasn't the mess it could have been.  I've cleaned the carbs and fuel tank, as well as disassembled and cleaned the petcock. I also installed a small filter in the line between the tank and carbs.

Present plan for MD2, if it is not otherwise needed for the project, is to use as a "before" example when MD1 is displayed as "after".  We also plan to ride it on the street as it seems like it would be especially good for a newer/lighter/smaller rider. Besides, it looks like we're going to have a lot of stock spares from MD1!    ;)

The ongoing problem is that the floats seem to stick and the carb overflows out the overflow drains after th ebike runs for a while.  I believe that the needle valve is somehow jamming between the float and bore of the seat, preventing the float from rising and shutting off the fuel.  The bore of the seat is very clean, and the needle looks good (clean, smooth).  We've set float height and the bike runs good for a while, but then it starts overflowing.  I think that the needle is somehow getting cocked in the bore, and wonder if the tab that acts against the pin in the bottom of the needle may be bent at such an angle that it is causing it to jam the needle itself.  Floats aren't cheap when buying 4, so while I don't mind doing that... I just hate to just do so on a whim and it not be likely to fix the problem. 

Any thoughts from the group here?

Check the overflow tubes in float bowls, they get cracks.Trash, I know you cleaned but fine surface rust will do it also. May just need needle and seat assemblies.Some only use needles. Floats you probably don't need.Good luck, nice work for sure ! Bill

Ill second re checking or replacing needles and seats. They can sometimes bind and cause overflow too. Try tapping your float bowls with a screwdriver when they're leaking.  If that solves it they may just wear in.

Started mocking stuff up for the intake manifold last night.  I hate that it all fits perfectly in your mind, but as soon as you try, the original plan gets compromised.  Down side to working on bikes with limited space I guess.

The plan as of now is to mount the turbo in front of the rear tire, above the swing are pivot.  It will be hard-tailed so no worries about that.  Then the intercooler will sit above and behind it and will be fed hot air from the side facing the tire. (Im dreading making the end tank, as it will be very tight).  Then the cool air will come out the front with a pretty direct shot at the throttle body, which will sit straight out and centered to the cylinder head/ports. 

After doing some calculations, I came up with a 2" runner length.  Sadly because the injector bungs, It wont be as easy to make them adjustable, so that will have to be a project for another time.  About the only way would be to make the runners bolt onto the head/plenum flanges, and build multiple sets of runners with injector bungs pre welded in each.  Maybe on the next manifold I guess  :(

Really starting to stress about fitting everything on the bike too.  After the turbo/intercooler/intake manifold/ piping are on, all the space from the rear tire to the head is pretty much used up.  Still have to fit the megasquirt box, fuel pump/regulator, intercooler water pump, battery, and im sure more stuff I'm forgetting.   :o

Can you stretch the WB to give yourself some more space?  Also, the extra stability seems like it wouldn't hurt, either.

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

Yes you can in "modified chassis"  You are allowed +10%, which we have already taken advantage of.  We moved the front tire out 2.5" with rake, and stretched the swing arm 2.5" also.

STRUTS or SHOCKS = Wait until you hit a bump on that salt with those struts.....  You ever see a BUSA run down thw 1320'  w/ no bars and struts at 206mph ???? bet not......  wait until Sammy hits the wrong bump W/STRUTS and goes into a tank slapping ride = he will be whiter than his leathers if he makes it to a stop W/OUT A CRASH.

I'm with POPs on the shocks......the salt is quite bumpy and changes during each day depending on the weather and others on the course.  Your tires will likely have 50-lbs. of pressure so the shocks are the only thing to absorb a bump and the springs will tend to keep the wheel on the course.  Also, soft-spots on the course lead to wheel-spin and suspension tends to prevent "stepping out".  Take a look at the ATSF thread and the recent post with the magazine article.

I run in the modified class and use shocks with an extended swingarm. I have the pre-load set very stiff and only get about 2-inches of travel.  At my speeds I don't really have a concern......but this year I hope to be in the plus 90s 8) 8) 8)

While we're on the topic of suspension... what's your opinion on front brake?  Matt and I have a difference of opinion re: necessity.  He has a rule book.  I don't, so honestly don't know if it's required.  (That would quickly end the discussion!) 

BTW, intercooler arrived today.  Lots of aluminum! I usually let him open the shipments, but couldn't resist opening this one.

I've heard a lot of people don't run a front brake on the salt because of the drag, of course I could be wrong.

Front brake is not going back on, unless we run at a location that its mandatory. At bonneville, it isn't.

Lots of people run hard tails out there. I have been searching the land speed racing forum and others looking for discussions on it. I think it will be fine. I'm just going to make adjustable rods that bolt directly in place of the stocks struts....if its absolutely necessary I will swap back to them when we are out there.

I also realized my chosen 2" runner length was wrong. I calculated on the 4th harmonic rather than the 3rd. Good news though, because now I can make them adjustable.  :D

I found the FIM record set at Bonneville, the bike was a TZ Yamaha and it was normally aspirated.
