garage find
« on: October 08, 2012, 03:56:21 PM »
So im out on the 550 about a week ago and as usual there are a few conversations started up. one went the way of I have had xyz bikes and I have z bike still in the garage wife doesnt want me to ride just had twins etc. I sure you have all heard the story. So we get into conversation off bike topic then go to part ways and the guy ask me to come have a look at his bike to see if i can get it running. in the back of my mind im thinking "didnt you just tell me you were banned from riding by your wife" a week passes and I decide to drop him a line. he ask me to shoot by somewhere in the Hollywood hills to check the bike out. ok WTH im not busy. so I get there and expecting a pile of garbage from what he described he presents me with this. 77 triumph Bonneville 750. Great condition two flats no rust needs a key and some rubbers from carb to airbox a little oil seeping at the top end. He goes on about just getting it running then letting me take it off his hands. Didnt get into price but I have always wanted one of these and it may be worth the wrench time to get to know the ins and outs on these and possibly get a good deal. excuse the crappy pic. any thoughts on these brit bikes? pain in the butt or pretty much standard old bike.
Cheers and thanks

Being a triumph, the electronics are always a pain in the a$$!
Other then that, they are very simple and pretty straight forward.
They do make new modern electronics that will fix all the real issues.
Definitely worth looking in to.

Yeah, the electrics are poop but as scrap said a very solid bike once you get some modern electrics for it.

If it stops leaking, check the oil.

I wouldnt get too too excited over it unless you can swing a good deal....
The 650's seem to be the more collectable and many of this generation Triumphs were prone to leaks in the tubes around the lifters, just to point out something to check out.

Like I said, the 750's are cool, but if you are looking to flip it in the near future, I would do my homework on fair pricing.  Good thing is, there are a lot of them still out there and a good supply of parts available.

Just grab it if it's a fair price. Too many people here have agonized over a price or let an opportunity slide only to start a new thread about missing it and wished they had gone ahead with it. I would be all over it. JMO, Cliff.

Wow nice find. I'm working on a guy here at work that has a complete (but motor is in boxes) 1963 T120 Bonneville 650 in his garage. He got it from his dad 15 years ago who bought it new in 1963. He's a bike guy but he's into new bikes. He buys himself a new one every few years. He keeps saying he might have the Triumph fixed up but he never will. He hasn't touched it in 15 years. I've seen his unfinished house and his unfinished truck project. He'll never get to the bike. I'll keep working on him.

The last models had iffy quality control. They do have an Elect Starter, like anything British needs another electrical device ::) I have tons of info on them if you would like to see some testdrives and such.

Duanob,
That 1963 Bonnie is the one to have, work Dude hard and get that one.

I'm trying. Emotional baggage tied to the bike for now.
