stator cover leaking oil
« on: July 08, 2006, 01:05:33 PM »
well I bought this 1975 cb550 a couple months ago and just got done getting it back from a shadey shop that can't get the stator cover to stop leaking oil out from around the wires.  they just tried a new gasket on my old cover and by the time I got home it was leaking (hasn't even been fired up yet and was leaking 30 mins after they finished it)  I picked up a new gasket and have a spare cover but the rubber boot around the wires is kinda in rough shape.  so I guess I am wondering if buikding a new boot with rtv and letting it fully cure and then putting the new gasket on it and bolt the cover back on will work?

In which case they really dont have the faintest idea what they are doing. there should not be any oil inside the stator cover on a 550.Either the main oil galley plug is missing or the main bearing seal is U/S. pic is of spare case if you need plug, its upside downand I didnt mean to post it twice but stuff happens

AH HA!!!

I had the old cover off since it was in a million pieces (alignment dowel bosses broken off) and fired it up with no cover (windings would hit crank and bad things)  I guess when I fired it up it got spit out.  a couple weeks back I was cleaning up the garage and found a little AL plug about 18mm or so with an o-ring on it and a little 2mm stub on it....had no idea where it came from or what it was so just tossed it in the junk pile (IE pile of loose bits with no home) as I have 2 other bikes apart right now (RD400 race bike I am building and a MT250)  well now I know what it is and can go fix it now!!

I love the internet!!

I guess your "shadey shop" isn't all that familiar with SOHC4's, at least not Honda 500-550 SOHC4's.   ;)

well there are 3 shops in town....the two dealers and these guys (they keep a beer cooler in the "shop")

mostly they do POS harleys (IE drunk bar hopper bikes) brit bikes (triumphs and BSA's) and XS650's and a bit of honda bikes.  funny thing is they pulled the stator cover off a parts bike at the warehouse and still didn't notice the plug...I am just glad to have my bike back and not leaking now.

the only problem I have now is it won't idle/run for crap.  I am going to get some fresh gas tomorrow and check the plugs and put a full charge on the battery and see if that helps it out.
