350f ignition switch problem
« on: November 08, 2012, 04:02:34 PM »
So I'm having the common ignition switch problem.  So I'm hoping to get some guidance here.  I've been poking around this forum for some time and I've noticed there are plenty of knowledgeable people here.  I've searched for an answer, but haven't found it yet.

My ignition switch solder came off the red wire. I re-soldered then the black came off.  I re-soldered with 60% tin 40% lead on both, but the red wire keeps coming off.

I ordered a replacement and it worked for about a month until the wires melted together.

So I'm stuck and this is my first motorcycle. It's a 73 350f completely stock with 4k original miles. I absolutely love it and would appreciate guidance.

Thanks in advance!

The Emgo replacement switch is pretty good but won't handle the ignition current for long and fail prematurely - probably that is what happened happened to you. The easy way to fix this is to add an automotive relay (horn relay) and just switch the relay coil with the ignition switch, letting the relay carry the system power. Done this way the Emgo switches last a long time.

Thank you for your response.  Now if I may have a little more detail on how I would wire this up?

It's not hard to figure out, but Hondaman sells a kit to do it if you aren't comfortable winging it.

Ninz  Think of these relays as a small miniature starter solenoid. They work the same way. They have a coil inside and when you put power to it it turns into a magnet that closes a set of contacts. So the key sw. will give power to the little coil and the heavy load will go on the contacts. When you get one there will be a drawing on the side of it with some numbers. It is a matter of putting the correct wire on the correct terminal on the relay. For a first timer I would highly suggest using HondaMans kit http://sohc4shop.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=23. It is truly plug and play. Simple instructions after you see how it works you should be able to do another one on your own. I will tell you the one thing you want is a good crimp tool http://www.vintageconnections.com/  Don't get one of those that uses the red, blue and yellow connectors you see at the auto stores invest in good tools.

Thank you both for your response. I had somewhat of an idea on how to wire it up, but not a full understanding.  I looked up the keyswitch saver and I am in the process of buying one, as well as the crimp tool.  I have the auto parts store set and they are pretty terrible. I will post up the results when I get the kit and tool in.  Again thanks for your advise guys!

When you get the kit from HM look how nice the connectors and the crimp look. He uses the same tool & connectors. I'm sure you will see the difference when compared to the red yellow & blue stuff. I just bought the shrink tube label maker for making up some wire harness for a few of bikes. It just adds that extra touch I like when you do not have the right color wire.
