Tuned out to be few problem.  Slow jets on 3-4 are clogged.  Spark plugs also fouled.  Clutch friction plates stuck.  All easy fixes.  With engine off, put in 5 gear, rock and push the bike back and forth. Repeat with 4th gear, 3rd gear, then 2nd gear.  By the time I got to 1st gear I was tired.  And the bike won't move.  Stated up the bike, put in 1st, then off I went around the block at jogging speed.  So she runs!

But she runs like crap, still have hang idle and carb slides won't come down issues, so I'm going to take off Tracy body and pull the carbs.  May be putting stock carbs on and tank with left hand petcock.  Ditch the Tracy?

I think the build thread might be dead but I think your issue might be the ethanol in the gas. Could be making the tank gummy, that is why the carbs keep getting sticky

If you drop in could you show how you actually mount the bodykit? I have a 750 that I want to mount my tracy kit on and would love to see some mounts

Hey BJ, this project is not dead yet but have other things to do. 

Yeah I have the feeling that the carbs gummed up.   Will have to seal the tank before moving on. 

The tank body has two holes toward the rear hump seat area to mount to frame.  That's about it.

Haven't touched this project in awhile. Quick look over. 

Front tire doesn't hold air....
Carbs are completely stuck....
hmm...

Will most likely ditch the Tracy body for awhile until I get the tank sealed up.  Mean while, will try to find some time to get carbs cleaned up, among list of other things I have to do...

So the carbs bores are gummed up and frozen shut due to Tracy body tank old liner, so I pulled the body and carbs off.  Soaked the carbs in hot water mix with pine sol for 15 minutes and that did the trick freeing up the carbs.   I'm really not looking to coat the Tracy body tank, so thinking of just pull throw orange tank on it...

Went in to my backyard, spent sometime tinkering with the carbs, cleaned out jets and other holes, lowered clips all the way down to bottom notch from 3rd and among other things. Six hours later my bike looks like this





Kicked started the bike few times and found that valves are sticky from sitting, brand new valve seals when the engine was apart.  It didn't sound horribly bad, so I kept kicking to get some oil up the top end, valves sticking noise are now gone, but wonder if this is the right thing to do.

Bike looks good Gold Dude.  Might have been a good idea to get oil to the top end before starting it, but doubt you did damage.

Got only few things done today, but felt a lot of accomplishment. 

Spent about an hour on my 550 bike, with my collections of keys related parts I was able to get a full working set matched numbers, swapped them in now I feel like I can go park out in public places and able to lock the forks.  Also shimmed carbs needle as the bike felt weak in midrange.  We'll see how that rides next time I take it out. 

Now the really good part of the day. Spent several hours tinkering this spyder, and I think it's ready for shake down, break in run!

Cleaned the orange tank with denatured alcohol, drained, filled in gas, drained. Rerouted fuel line, hooked up to the tank.  Had the battery charged the night before.  Took quite a few kicks to get it stated, and the bike was running only on 1 and 2 cylinders.  3 and 4 were cold, checked the bowls and jets, everything looked fine.  Checked the plugs, flooded, swapped in two new ones.  Really good power and throttle response.  Put a smile on my face and telling myself, this one is ready for a shake down run!

But need a nice seat though. Which one?

Thanks for the idea Larry. So off I went. To walmart for a slicer for 10 bucks. Just got a chance to day after work. 

Ripped off the cover and started slicing.

I used the original seat cover by cutting off the rear section and restretching it, but I doubt you have that option. Check with a local uphostery shop, you may get lucky and find a reasonable price.  I like the look of the shape you made...Larry

I've had a couple and I've trashed em, not worth the space they consume for me.

The other night, was going back through all the posts since started this project, didn't realize time flies by so quick.  This project has taken me 13 months so I thought...heck let's steal stock seat out my my k6 and get out on the road.  So here she is



And stock seat looks great




Took the bike out for a spin, both freeways and streets, put about 50 miles on her.  50 degrees morning ride, felt great!   The bike rides a bit lean, just as expected, as I hadn't a chance to up the slow jets yet.  Overall, gr8t ride! EXCEPT, I might have to remove the motor again and tear into bottom end! :'( she jerks a lot when shifted into 2nd gear

Did so much reading about 2nd gear issues, splitting cases is inevitable. 

Ordered a 24mm clutch locknut socket spanner tool from amazon for less than $8. Stripping down the bike today while awing in for the tool to come in

Yeah, the bike was pretty rough when I bought it.  My k6 that I bought few months ago also have similar 4th gear issues.  Seems like back in the day, they liked to push these bikes hard.
