Sanity Check Please!!!! RE: Oil Change
« on: July 08, 2006, 03:58:37 PM »
I just drained all the oil from the tank and the oil pan, then removed and replaced the oil filter.  I kicked a couple of times as the clymer manual sugests.  I assumed all 3.7 Quarts had been drained.  I then pour 3 Quarts of oil into the tank. Low and behold there is WAY too much oil in there.  Am I missing something?  Am I a complete boob?  Can someone shed some light on what I may have done wrong or what step I have skipped?

Its a 76 750 F.

3 quarts is normal on my 750F.  Start and run the engine until the level in the oil tank starts to go down and it should be at the full mark on the dipstick.  If not, just top it up.  In my experience the 3.7qts is very optimistic.

I think that .7 qt was meant as backup for the miles between oil changes when we all lose oil from the head gasket.  ;)

I'm going to figure this difference out if it kills me.  >:( I did just have a rare thought. When I do an oil change, I do the tank first, then put the plug back in and move on to the pan and filter. When kicking it over to get the last of the oil out, is some oil from the pump going back up to the tank? Should I be leaving the tank plug out also when kicking it over?

Ponder, ponder.  :-\

Nah, you're just a complete boob mate, ha ha! Seriously though, unless you drop the sump pan off, drain the oil filter, oil tank, and kick that engine over until there is nothing hiding in the head, transmission etc, you'll never get 3.7 quarts into it. There's just too much residual hiding in low spots. if you strip the engine entirely, then you'll get it all in, no worries! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Hate to burst your bubble, Bob- but I just proved Terry right! I just got around 3.7 quarts into the 750 I was just working on... however, every oil gallery had been drained and cleaned out in the motor, so it was completely "dry".

That's cheating.  :) I'm under the impression some are getting 3.7 in on a routine oil change.

So how are some getting 3.7 qts in theirs?

Signed: Complete Boob  ;D

This IS curious. I've changed a LOT of oil on a LOT of CB750s, and all of them easily accepted the 3.7 qts. The K0 actually held 4.0 qts, first 4-5 months of production (bigger, square-er oil tank at the top was the reason, then Honda changed the manual and the dipstick). I usually run 4.0 qts. in my K2, doesn't cause any problems.

The sequence I've always used: drain tank first, then crankcase and filter housing at the same time, then remove filter. On reinstall, kick over 40-50 times until the oil light goes out (maybe add another few electric-start seconds for good luck), then start & run 1-2 minutes, stop and check level.
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

The demons are repulsed when a man does good. Use that.
Blood is thicker than water, but motor oil is thicker yet...so, don't mess with my SOHC4, or I might have to hurt you.

Good grief, 40-50 times?! Hmm, I will give this routine a try next time and see. Where is that extra quart in my bike?

Terry, did you steal it?  ;D

Of course, it this it true, I've probably never had really clean oil after a change if there's a quart of dirty left in there.  >:(

That's it men, check your oil an hour after an oil change and it looks pretty murky if there was all that stuff still lurking in your cases. I just bought the BMW I've been yakking about, now my mate (the PO) did an oil and filter change with new synthetic (as he's been using in it since almost new) last month and it's already as black as, so I'm guessing he didn't get all the old stuff out........... I just ordered a new oil/filter change kit, and I'll be making sure I get the bulk of the old stuff out this time. Cheers, Terry. ;D

What are the consequences of overfilling the oil reservoir?
a) catastrophic global meltdown
b) minor levels of urban carnage
c)  a bit less dinosaur decay available for the next generation
d) no biggie

Depends on by how much. Just a wee bit, no biggie probably. More than that, an oil version of Lake Erie on your garage floor.  :)

You can take it back down to the correct level with a turkey baster. Guess how I know.

 ???

It's incredibly strange how some things happen/work out/take place........

From day number one with my '74 CB750 K4, I have always installed 3.7 quarts of oil with out any hassles/problems at all...........

Must be harmonic vibrations of the dark side of the force intercepting powers of the light side.....

so exactly when is the best time to check your oil level...  because i get different readings after rides than i do when the bike is cold and it's driving me nuts.  i don't like to ride with the oil at the very top of the dipstick because it seems like my slight tach cable leak becomes a little worse if the oil level is high. but i'm having a hard time keeping the oil at a good level (or at least knowing when to read the dipstick)

any ideas?

Hi jdpas29,

Get your bike up on the center stand on a level surface.  Start your bike's motor and let it warm up a little - - - - a 1 minute run should be good enough.  Stop the engine, pull the cap on the oil tank, wipe the dipstick clean with a rag.

I only know that on my '74 750 K4, I am supposed to check the oil level by letting the cap sit on top of the neck; not by "screwing" it in to its final rest position.  Now, check the oil residue marks in regards to the low and totally full marks.

If low, add oil judiciously; if over filled, bail out oil with a bucket......... ;) ;)

P.S. I have been told that an over full oil tank will cause oil to bypass a bad "O" ring at the tachometer engine mount position.
