'76 CB550K Rebuild
« on: November 26, 2012, 08:27:26 AM »
I thought I would start a thread on the rebuild of my CB550. Hopefully some kind people will point out mistakes and provide a bit of advice for me. I'm no mechanical dummy, but most of what I've done in the past has been with cars.

The idea in my head so far is to cleanup the bike, and make a brat sort of bike out of it.

How the bike looked when I first brought it home. If anyone wants to know what a F seat on a K bike looks like. It looks like that.  ??? I replaced the seat pan with a K model, and ebay cover.

It was my first motorcycle, and I didn't even have a motorcycle endorsement yet. I bought a ninja 250 to learn on. Then sold it a month later and bought a Honda 919.

The 550 was hard to start, and leaked oil quite a bit out of the top area of the timing side of the engine.

Due for a freshening up I'd say.

I've already rebuilt the carbs.

Cleaned the gas tank, and coated it with redcoat.

Replaced the coils, and put a new clutch in.

I rode it around a little bit. The bike still runs poorly, and leaks oil excessively.

So it was time to tear it all apart.

The current state of the bike.

The Valve seals are all wet. Is there a recommended shop I can send the head off to to get checked and rebuilt? I'm not looking for any performance work, just replace what needs to be replaced.

Is that excessive or normal wear on the piston skirts? Same with the camshaft and rockers. I guess I'll need to do some measuring. Cylinders are looking fine. No marks of any sort.

Current issues to move forward: Head bearing races need to be beaten out. No idea how I'm going to get these fragile head studs out of the engine case without destroying them all. I plan to put in studs.

Piston's came off the rods without issue.

I got about 5 studs out before I ran out of propane in my heat wrench. ;) All came out using double nuts and heating the area around the studs.

Steering head bearings popped right out with a few shots from the BFH.

Need to start detabbing the frame, and cleaning it up. I bought a wire wheel and flap disc, but they don't fit my angle grinder.
