Hi all,
I am restoring some small honda motorcycles.
Any good groups to reccommend?

The XR Forums cover the singles if that's your game.

Honda twins is where you will find lots of info on those little bikes.  Not as good as this forum though.  What's up with the rings?  Are they just stuck in the grooves?

Maybe a 50/50 diesel/ vinegar mix?

Yep, the top 2 rings are stuck solid.
I'm thinking of buying some acetone and mixing it 50/50 with diesel to see if
that will work.

If you can get a small screw driver or similar device into the ring gap, you may be able to pry the rings out.  Something else to try is put them in the oven for 20mins or so on about 350F this should expand the pistons and free the rings.

+1 on the heat, and you could try your freezer too. Back and forth. The looser you can get them without poking tools into it  the better off you could be. I have had luck with this and a hooked seal remover after the rings got loose( not really loose  but just sprung from the piston). The hardest part has been keeping my wife out of the freezer, and they really hate bike parts in the oven, but the bar-B Quer is almost in MAN's WORLD, so you may have a chance with that.

I (well, ok, my girlfriend) just bought a 1971 CB175 twin.  Nice bike.

For problems like what you're dealing with (stuck piston rings), I suggest asking the folks in this forum first.  Hondatwins is a nice forum with knowledgeable and kind folks, but it's pretty dead compared to this forum - not much activity there.  Besides, you don't need to be a twin expert to help a guy out with stuck rings.

I had a stuck ring on a 125 single.  I tried the acetone/ATF trick, but to no avail.  I had to take the head off and beat it out with a piece of wood.  So I guess, if it comes to that, just remember you heard it here first.   :D

Good luck with it!

Try a mix of acetone, atf and home heating oil.  If you can't get the home heating oil try either kerosene or diseal fuel.  Give it some time because you are going to want that stuff to seep in.

Okay, i'll ask....... How did you scorch your pistons?     Do you mean before it stopped running ,or , did you set the mix on fire in the cylinder?

I scratched the pistons taking the rings out.
Not sure if they are worth using again.

I guess that'll depend on cost and availability right? I find that most times , if you are careful they can be deburred, cleaned up  and reused as  long as they aren't too badly damaged.
