I came across a set of Sun rims yesterday and notice some engravings.... First rim is engraved  03B 1174.......... From what Mr. Google provided, this rim is a NOS Hallman Racing Sun Metals Rim Wheel Hoop CR125M CR250M Elsinore 18 x 2.15, Made November 1974.

Second rim is a Sun too. This one was engraved with 04B 974..... Is this the same rim???  One front one rear?????? Different build date obviously.....
Since 36 holes does this mean they are for a 550? As I think the 750 uses 40 spokes... Correct?

These have never been used and from what I see, if Hallman rims which i know one is, they go for crazy money....

All the 550 ive had have had 40 spokes. Couple bikes ive seen with 36 spoke. 125, 200, 350, an I believe some of the early 400 had 36 also.

those ones you can use unless 40 was a typo
why not find a 36 hole hub an build them. maybe do a straight 8 guage for some strength

I didn't think about that..... I will look around ebay for hubs but if I can't find the proper ones I will list on Ebay... This sucks, the sun rims I got but they really nice..... The Akronts, I thought I would be able to use on my next 750 project...

You might be able to sell the rims to someone restoring a vintage Honda motocross bike. Much easier than trying to find a hub and fitting it to the rim. ;)

I was out putzing with the 750K4 last night and decided to take a look at my Sun rims again..

I miss counted the spoke holes... I counted 40 of the spoke holes but the weird part is the 3 holes that are bigger.. They seem evenly spaced on the rims... Can someone tell me if these are an odd/ mispunched rims that are useless?

Pics showing the bigger diameter holes... Only 3 as stated. Since they have 40 holes minus the 3 which I think may be for valve stems, would these be able to be used on a 750?

I suspect that two of those three holes are for rim locks, pretty much what I would expect for dirt bike rims.

Rim locks? No idea what those are. So these are useless for a 550 or 750.. ehhhhh damn it

NOT rim locks ,, BEAD locks, once the tire is mounted ( OFF ROAD TIRE) the beadlock is tightened down to hold the tire on the rim. Almost a priority to have for dirt bike!!!

If you want to use those rims without the locks, there are some rubber plugs to put in the holes. I've seen them on rims, but can't tell where to buy them.

Yep. Rim locks is what they are most commonly called. FWIW I had a rear tire that going flat a while ago and found out that my rear tire had spun on the rim and ripped the tube. It might be a good idea to use a rim lock if you have a good runner ;)lol

But on the spoke count. Once you subtract the valve stem hole,  and the two rim lock holes, then you still have 40 spoke holes left, right?

A 40 spoke rim is a 40 spoke rim. It has no idea what hub you lace it to. The rims you have here dont have directional dimples so you dont have bad nipples angle working against you.
The darn fool didn't know it couldn't be done...so he went ahead and did it anyway.

It just occurred to me the thought of trying to balance a tire with a rim lock in it :o LOL. So please understand I was just messing around about running the lock...that is unless they are 180 degrees out ;)That would probably balance out OK.

Please post pics if you use these rims. I kinda dig the fact that they dont have nipples dimples. Clean look

The holes are still drilled at an angle of some sort. The depth of the thickness of the rim. So there may still be an angle issue of the spokes. Especially on the rear where the spoke enters the rim at a steeper angle than the front. Pop a nipple in the hole and see where it points when its laying flush in the hole. I'll bet its not towards the target on the hub. Then if you kant it up on its edge to get it pointing right, well, is that good?
