CB400F Fork Braces
« on: November 11, 2012, 01:59:05 PM »
I went to Trail Kat's place a few weeks ago and he said he'd make me a fork brace for my CB400F and today he got it done.

.

Overall I'm very happy with the brace in the little riding I've done with it on. It's pretty impressive how obvious the stock forks flex after you put one of these on. It's night and day.

To get the brace to work we had to grind off the stock center bracket and screw the fender into the middle fork brace. Not hard really, but just be aware there's work to be done to make this fit. He made 2 more, so if someone wants one they can get a hold of him via his email on his site (google search "Trail Kat"). He said the price of them would $165.

EDIT - BELOW ARE INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS FROM TKAT

CB 400 F/B Installation Instructions
This installation is somewhat involved.  It is more complicated than most all others.  Use common sense and don’t rush.  The single most difficult part is removing the existing center fender bracket from the fender.

1.   Unbolt and remove the fender and brackets from the forks.  This is most easily accomplished by unbolting the front bracket completely, the rear and center brackets at the stanchion, and pulling the fender down and out from the rear.

2.   Remove the center bracket from the fender however you’d care to.  It gets in the way of the clamps.  The easiest way is saw the thing off at the fender edge line.  A better way is to grind the heads of the rivets off on the inside and punching out the remainder.

3.   Slide the dust boots up out of the way and install the clamps.  Note they are match marked.  Tap down, square, and snug the clamps but do not tighten.  Reinstall the fender and braces in position, no need to tighten.  The fender will probably need to be squeezed together and pulled up between the clamps.  Tap down the clamps again.

4.   Put a piece of masking tape on the top of the fender to mark on and lay the X-bar in position.  Squeeze the two together.  Mark the fender through the center hole in it.  Use a thin “scratch all”.  Remove both the X-bar and the fender. Drill a 1/4” Ø hole in the fender at the marked position.

5.   Either bolt the fender onto the x-bar from the bottom using the supplied screw, lock washer, and loc-tite or from the top using a washer and lock nut.  The X-bar thds are 1/4-20 UNC.

6.   Straight edge square the clamps and cinch down the bolts evenly in steps.  Try to even the joint gaps side to side.

7.   Reinstall the X-bar, fender attached, center the bolts in the slots and tighten evenly.

8.   Reinstall fender braces.  Position dust boots.  Cinch down all F/B bolts.  Go for a spirited ride.  Return and recheck all bolts.  Recheck after some days worth of riding.

That’s it.  All there is to it.

Looks a nice bit of kit. Is there any kind of guide for that brake hose included? If not I would be very concerned about what may happen to the hose when the forks are fully compressed.

No hose holder. You'll have to fab one of those if you want/need it. However, if you're forks are fully compressed I think you've got other problems.  LOL
