CBR600 F2 wheels on a CB550
« on: November 06, 2012, 02:50:41 PM »
Let me try this again. When I posted a few days ago about F2 wheels on a 550, I meant CBR600 F2 wheels. I am new to the SOHC world and did not know there is also a F2 from the 70's. As much as I would like so Aluminum hoops with Buchanan spokes on my hubs, its not going to happen if I ever want to ride this bike. I have a set of wheels and forks off my 92 F2 track bike left from when I put F3 wheels and forks on. I can weld and fab things as needed, not an issue. Just would like to hear from some one that did it or even just tried and gave up.

TIA

If you have the fab skills you mentioned it should be relatively easy for you to make them fit, you will have to find bearings to allow the use of the stock axles {if you are going to use the stock items}...

Just out of curiosity, what were the differences between CBR F2 and F3 wheels? Those bikes were more similar than different.

As for the rear, if I remember correctly, F2 is 4.5 inch wide and designed to run a 160 tire. F3 comes in 2 different widths, 5 and 5.5. Stock F3 rear tire was a 170, I use a 5.5 and a 180, race rubber is much more common in a 180.

For the front wheel, it is alost the same, but F2 uses 280mm rotors where the F3 uses 320mm full floating rotors. Can not interchange rotors between the wheels. And the fork lowers (and internals even tho the tubes are the same) are different to accomadate the larger rotors.

I put F3 rear 5.5 and front wheel/forks brakes on my F2. Coming down the front stretch at PIR at 140 into a 60mph first turn the difference in braking is much better.

I have all the F2 stuff left over and would like to put later cast wheels and front forks on my 550. I have the parts, dont care if I fit in a class, just want to do some laps on the 550. I realy like the looks of spoked wheels on a vintage bike but the cost of new hoops and spokes on my existings hubs is not in the budget.

Exactly what I was thinking. Raced an F2/3 for a number of years but always thot a cool old middle weight bike would be much fun.

If you search the projects forum, you'll find all sorts of fork swap treads.
What you're suggesting is a breeze, especially if you keep the front end complete.

#$%* man, after reading your project build I am honored that you chimed in on my budget build question.

I dug the parts out last night and started a mock up, looks like this is going to be a real easy swap. Ill post some pics this weekend.
