What is this seat?
« on: November 14, 2012, 07:48:17 AM »
Hi All!
I'm a newbie here. Currently building up my 76 CB550 and will be posting about that in Projects.

I am after a certain type of custom seat, but I have no idea what this seat is called or how it's referred to in the  custom world. It is not a traditional cafe seat with a hump, but rather a flat minimal looking one. I've been trying to find something like this on eBay with no luck.
I am willing to sacrifice my stock seat to manufacture something like this.
If there is an existing thread on how to build a seat like this, I would really appreciate a link.
Cheers

these are all custom seats.
take the pictures to an upholster and they will do it up for you, or you can do it yourself.
you can use your stock seat pan (benefit of existing hinges) as a base, or you can remove all the tabs from your frame and go the sheet metal route and mount it directly to your frame rails.

look up "Brat" seat. Dime City sells a couple universal seats:

but would be best to use your original seat pan as suggested.

Great, thanks for the replies!
I do know a great upholster that can do the foam and leather. I figured I'll have to modify my seat pan before handing it over to him.
I would like to avoid any frame modifications, so stock pan is the way to go.
My goal is to cut the length by about 6 inches and shave how much it overhangs on the fame. I want to preserve the overall look of the bike, so don't want to "brat" it out too much.

One suggestion, if you have a good condition seat, is to find just another good seat pan and work from that, rather than sacrifice a stock seat. Only because someone out there will be looking for an original seat.

+1 on getting a spare seat pan, I found a crap seat with a mint pan and built my own seat. Nice to have the stock one if I go on a trip, it's way cushier than the low profile one I built. Nice to have the option of one or the other.

Good point. My seat is in mint condition would be a shame to rip it up. Will start hunting for an old pan.

Wanna sell that seat ?   Maybe it funds your upholstery  ;)
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.
