Tank: How bad is "bad"
« on: July 09, 2006, 01:06:14 AM »
Just read 3 sticks post - durn his bike looks a look like the condition of my 72 500.  However I took my tank of last night, optimistically thinking it might be a candidate for resurrection. When i saw the large rusted out holes in the bottom of it I immediately jumped on trademe (NZ's answer to ebay - see www.trademe.co.nz) and ponied up $25 for a reasonable (only a few dents) tank offova 550 to tide me over (been reading the posts on making a cafe' racer tank too - jeez youse guys post a lot of stuff...).  So the question is, how far gone can a tank be and still be worth trying to fix - IYHO?

Dont know about the rust holes. But a old motorcyclist tought me if you take a dented tank
fill it with water, put it in the freezer it pops the dents out. You cant do it to a tank with knee
bends or any other decorative bends.

Hmm, have to try that, have a few small dents in my tank, a couple you have to feel for but one you can see easily, not a major dent, but enough to irritate me.
A friend used to say he used to put a couple firecrackers in the tank to knock out small 'smooth' dings, I normally bend some 3/4 rod to fit through the filler and press them out while tapping around the edge if they are sharp edged dings, normally form a radius on the end to avoid putting reversed dings in them.

ken.
