Finished the wiring tonight!! Just need to tie in the front brake light switch when i get my master cylinder figured out.

Gauges look nice... I would have done an LED conversion since you changed out the faces... I nice blue would have set those off even more... Good work though

Thanks Tews19, I’m kind of on the fence with the LED's. I have had them on my other (newer) Harleys and sport bikes and they rock, it’s just I want to keep the ol girl kinda close to stock with a few modern tweaks here and there. Here are the ones I did on my 04FXDL:

Since I painted the inside of the bezel white already all I got to do is pop em in so it’s an easy fix later.

Stev-o, I got the bike from an older guy who’s brother got it new so it’s had only been titled once before me. He said neither of them rode it much so I tend to believe it. The tool kit and manual under the seat was still there when I got it too!!

dhall57, Thanks! While I always have one late model sport bike around the house I tend to like the older bikes better. They just have character and after you work on them they tend to have that sole that the new plastic bikes just don’t have.

Carbs re-cleanded and back on the bike. Got the air box cleaned up and coated with peanut oil as well. Doesn't look to bad. Just waiting on a seal and I should be able to button her up for good.

Made some more progress yesterday on the ol girl. Stock exhaust is all cleaned up and back on with the original painted tank and side cover. Looks great!!!

Not much to report as of late. I’ve been slammed with work as usual.  >:(
I did order all the parts to have the front brakes back together so I hope the lines and pads make it in next week so I can get them back tougher next weekend. Here are the parts I have cleaned up for now.



Right now I need to take both wheels to a local shop to have both bearing retainer rings installed, and then polish the outside lip of the hubs and spokes. Order new tires (BT45's stock size) and have them mounted. Polish the rear sprocket mount and brake housing and get a new drive chain.

That may have to wait till next month for $$ reasons. Should be able to install the drive seal this weekend and hopefully get the girl running. Fingers crossed.

I just have to have it ready for the regional bike show at the end of March. After that who knows.

Brake pads are in so I plan on getting the front caliper back on this weekend. Still waiting on the brake lines though.

I did borrow a bearing retainer ring tool from my buddy’s bike shop that worked great on the front wheel. Just need to get the rear one in and its being a nightmare. Epically since I can’t find a tool that fits it. Right now I’m using an mtn bike tool that fits in the slots. I just can’t seem to get it in. Once that's done I'm going to spend some quality time polishing the outer lip of the front hub, spokes, and other wheel parts.

Got new mirrors in that are not near as goofy as the stock ones and not bar ends. Looks like they will work just fine.

Very Nice.  What did you use to clean the engine before paint?  Maybe you said earlier and I missed it.  Those pipes you have look to be worth more that you paid for the bike :-)

When the engine was on the stand I got after it with some degreaser and then mineral spirits and some rags/scrubbers. Before I painted it I wiped everything down with some paint prep.
Yeah the pipes are clean no rust. They do have the baffles cut out by the previous owner but I hope it helps when I eventually sell it!!

Thanks man! I checked out your project and its looking great. Good luck polishing your covers, its a time consuming process but it will set your bike apart from the rest when you have the shinny polished alloy!!! 8)

ANy more plans as far as modifications on the bike ?
Seems like we have the same "taste" keeping a stockish look and changing the things that could be better :)

Why mess with what looked good 30+ years ago right ;D!!! Once she is back going and I get past this bike show in March I hope to be able to take a trip or two on it first. I know I’m going to update the front forks with Race Tech goodies and need to make a decision on some good rear shocks as well. I really wanted to get a set of excel alloy wheels with a wider one out back but had to wait to stay on budget so I know that will come later as well. For now I think that’s about it.
I battled with wanting to do a lot to this bike in the beginning but it was so clean and everything was there so I hated to go changing too much ya know.
If I can run across a rougher one next I’ll go to town on it. I still would want it to be a standard bike but more modern on suspension, brakes, controls, paint, and electrical. Kind of an old soul in a new package ya know!

Finished up the front brakes today and got them bled. All ready to go once I get my tires in hopefully next week.



Oh yeah got the old girl running too! Synced the carbs and it sounds good. Im sure there will be some more adjustments but overall a success.



Only had one leak... The gamble I took on reusing the old feed and return lines didn't work out. One has a leak about mid line. Ill have to find some new ones before I ride it.

Went to a local hose shop and one of the guys fixed me up with new stainless oil lines. Super stiff installing but after letting the oil get good and hot from the engine running for a while I’m proud to report no leaks.



Got the drain screw leak fixed as well but that was super easy.

Also got the rear wheel cleaned up and the sprocket mount as well.



The master cylinder I got off EBay started leaking but the good news is the guy is going to send me another one at no charge. I just got to re-bleed the brakes but it could be way worse.

Just down to a few things now so I’m getting really close and excited 8)

Those oil lines look great! My K5 has a leak in that area too, have not found out exactly where yet.
