I want your opinion on my next bike
« on: November 13, 2012, 03:47:36 PM »
Ok so before i go anywhere im just putting this out there, Yes im 18 and yes my next bike is going to a big ol' Touring bike. (get your laughs in now)  Ok now onto the details, My current bike is a 1982 Yamaha Virago 750, Its nice but i want to do longer trips, something a little larger for my frame, i want a radio.  I have had my truck for sale for a long time so a few days ago i put in the ad will trade for touring bike. after alot of #$%* offers, i was offered a 1983 Yamaha Venture XVZ1200 with 24000 miles plus a 1966 Suzuki B100P,  I am very interested in this trade (i attached a few pictures below of these two bikes)  I know the venture has problems with 2nd gear going out and possible frame issues.  The other Bike i was just offered today is a 1984 Honda Goldwing GL1200 Aspencade with 53000 miles. I have yet to see any pictures but he said it is in good shape and runs good.  I know these bikes tend to have stator problems.  And I am aware that they are both big bikes, expensive insurance, both will require work being older.  But as you guys may know, I am more than willing to take on a small project.  I am going to look at both, but does anyone have an opinion one way or the other. The truck im trading a 1998 Dodge Dakota asking $2500 FWIW

Any transmission problem would automatically eliminate the bike, so that leaves the GW.  Way more made so parts availibility would be greater...Larry

I vote for the Wing also - it's tough to beat a Honda. Plus like folks have already said parts & information are readily available - and there are lots & lots of them around.

I really dig that little Suzuki so if you go the other way and want to sell it let me know. The OL would cool on that. :)

Although getting the little Suzuki B100P with the Venture would be nice (I'd love to have a bike like the B100P in running condition).   8)
However I agree with the others, the Wing is your best bet (as long as the stator is good or has been replaced recently).   ???
Keep in mind that this IS a SOHC forum and most of us are somewhat bias towards the Honda.   ;)

Get the GW ,53k miles is low for a WELL ridden GW and it's the Caddy on 2 wheels. The Venture weighs about 900lbs and its top heavy but it also has the same V4 engine that is in the V-MAX so there is NO lack of power there.
If the WING is full DRESSED and ready to roll, your best choice!!!

At least if you get the WING and your buddys are on their crotch rockets and you decide to ride, You could ride 500 miles without needing to stretch.
