CB650 - Fork Swap Steering Stem Length
« on: November 20, 2012, 06:15:28 pm »
Hey Guys,

Hoping you can help or point me in the right direction I want to do a fork swap on my CB650 (1979),

I have read the swaps on cb550, and that was a pretty straight forward for the GSXR1000 front end, but the CB750 required cutting and lengthening because the 750 stem is longer.

Does anyone know if the CB650 is the same length as the 550 or 750, or different all together.

P.s. a few pics of where I'm up to, a post with a pic is always more fun.

Cheers,
Mason

Mason Can you tell me what you are calling (steering stem) ??? I get lost on terminology once in a while. Are you talking about the triple tree?
Thanks
Ken

Yes, the shaft between the triple tree, or more importantly the head (the part of the frame the tree mounts too)

I just want to know if the cb650 and the cb550 are the same.

When I get home I will take a pic an post it so anyone with a CB550 can measure theirs and tell me who is bigger ;)

P.s I'm probably using the wrong terminology :) I normally point and grunt

Cheers?
Mason

Ok do I just measured it and a CB650 is  exactly 180mm. (Camera angle is a bit off in the pic)

If anyone is able to confirm the length of a CB550 would be awesome.

Hi - went out to the garage and measured my 78 550. It's 175mm.

I bought it because it is the same age as me!

Curious as to why you would want to put the 550 front end on the 650? The 650 forks are longer and have been updated over the 550 with better inner fork leg support.

resurrecting this from the dead.

MasonR, did you end up doing a swap? if so, which fork was the donor, and how much work was involved. I too have been throwing around the idea on my '79 CB650.
