Rear wheel won't balance

Hey, dudes.  It's another one of my silly threads.

I cannot for the life of me balance the rear wheel.  Wheel is trued, and there is a new tire on there.  I have about 70 grams on the light side, and it still continues to come to the same resting point.  Thoughts?

Also, how assembled does the wheel have to be?  On some Youtube videos, I just see the bearings pressed in with no dampers, shoes, covers, etc. on the wheel.  With other research that I do, folks suggest that everything that is usually attached to the wheel needs to on there.  FWIW, I tried to balance with nothing but the bearings and dampers inserted into the hub.

Shouldn't take more than 30g or so. Suspicious of tire mounting. There should be a yellow painted dot on the sidewall of the tire. This is the lite spot of the tire and should line up with the valve stem. How's that?

The wheel should be complete with rotating parts. The shoes don't rotate, nor does the plate they are on. etc.

Also, the valve stem is more or less where it's coming to a rest.

Yes, they've been very informative!

Any other suggestions for this?  What could be potentially out of whack?  How much could the truth of the wheel or spoke tension affect things?

I googled my comment on wheel weights. Most suggestions were not to exceed 3oz, but with no reason why not. Other suggestions were to ignore the dot and move the tire around on the rim.

I wouldn't think truth or consequences would matter.

You did not drop anything in there did you like those beads? Nothing fell out of your shirt pocket? All you need is what rotates no brakes. Take the tire off and check the wheel balance with out it. Then you will find out what it is.

Beads?  Only wheel dampers and bearings are in.

He's probably referring to Dyna-Beads which is a controversial balancing product you flow into the tube. Once they are in there you cannot static balance the wheel .

Try rotating the tire 180 from the heavy side= move the yellow mark around the tire 180 degrees. I you think the tire company does a QC on EVERY tire I've got a bridge I'll seel you in Arizona. That yellow mark is supposed to show the LIGHTEST section of the tire so when you line it up with the valve stem (the heaviest ) section of the rim due to DYNAMIC weight. The farther away from the center of a hub with weight the worst the out-of-balance becomes.

Make sure the tire is evenly inflated-that the line around the rim has even spacing.  It is possible the bead is not fully seated..Larry

If there is a paint dot...yes, it is to show the light spot of the tire.  Some have it, some don't.

That said, I have seen many a wheel whose valve stem area was NOT the heavy spot of the wheel, with or without tubes.  Simply lining up the paint dot with the valve stem does not guarantee the best outcome.

Removing the tire itself, then putting the rim (and tube?) on the balancer will reveal the true heavy spot of the assembly without tire.

As long as you're adding weight in only one general area, there's really no such thing as too much weight, though it might be a problematic fit and/or ugly.

This I don't understand. I know you want the bead seated. But how does this change the weight? I'm not saying it is wrong. I just can't see how. Can you explain?

Ken,  from my experience  not having the bead seated will cause a very distinct wobble.  It seems to follow that one would not be able to balance the wheel if the tire is out of round-which it will be if the bead is not seated...Larry

Basically you are trying to balance the centerline of the tire in relationship to axle. If the tire bead is not properly seated , then it will cause the centerline of the tire to be off to one side= off balance.
The only advantage to checking the wheel ONLY for balance is just THAT!! You will find out where the balance points for the WHEEL falls, add a tire and you will need to rebalance because of the added weight and balance points of the tire.
