CB550K Brake lever
« on: November 26, 2012, 08:13:33 PM »
I had new stainless brake lines put on my 1975 CB550 k hoping that it would tighten up the braking a bit.  The shop put new pads on to and braking indeed feels better. The lever does not feel as stiff as I was hoping it would but I don't have a good reference to compare it to.  When I pull on the lever very hard the rubber tip on the end gets about 1" to the grip...
I can't find any specification in the manual aside from the "free play measurement". By the way, is the free play really supposed to be only 2-5mm?  Mine is more like an inch

I noticed a little fluid leaking out where the lever meets the MC after doing this.  Is that normal?
Thanks!

+1.  Last place you want a leak is in your brake system.  Needs to be addressed ASAP.

If the shop did the work on the brake, should go back to them and have them fix the leak.

Leaking brake is not only dangerous, but it will also eat your paint.

Unless you had the shop rebuild your master cylinder they won't touch it on their dime. And they shouldn't. Your MC needs a rebuild that will probably fix any softness in the brake lever and as stated before, fix the leak is not normal.

Tel me you are joking. No it is not normal. Before you ask no gas or oil leaks either. Some may question the oil  :D But mine does not leak. I don't concider the chain oiler a leak.

Ha yeah that was basically a rhetorical question about the leak...
Well I may have spoken too soon.  What I thought was a little bit of weeping from the master cylinder near the lever appears to have just been water mixed with grime.  I only had a chance to look it at night after picking the bike up from the shop
The free play- the lever assembly was missing that rubber bit that the lever bumps up against so I cut a bit from some spare fuel line and it seems better now
