Someone knocked it over...
« on: July 10, 2006, 06:27:55 AM »
Came out this morning and the bike was lying on it's side in the parking lot.  Couldn't have been a car because it fell in the wrong direction, so it must have been some #$(&*!@# playing on it.  Since the handlebars were locked they either (a) dropped it accidentally or (b) pushed it over intentionally.  It's one of those two because it was lying on its right side and the kickstand was still down on the left.

Problem is, I don't have case savers on the bike.  It looks like the 4-1 muffler took most of the impact, as well as my right bar-end mirror.  I'm thinking it was dropped accidentally because I only see scuffs, no real impact damage (like someone tried to "save" it from falling).  Handlebars are still good and the muffler bracket can be bent back into place.  There was about a 1/2 cup of oil spilled, and some dry and wet gas was spilled on the ground.

The oil level still looked OK so I starter her up and she warmed up and rode like she always does, but I don't trust it anymore.  Oh, I'm burning up right now.  But besides that, is there anything I should be watchful for?

I hate it when someone screws with my bike! >:(
If someone wants to look, fine. But if they want to sit on it, at least have the decency to ask me when I am there. People seem to think these bikes are like all others. they are not, we have a higher center of gravity which makes it easier to tip for someone who does not know. people just need to keep their hands off!

If it only fell and it runs ok you should have no mechanical problems and if all the electrics work its ok. Only possible damage, except scrapes, could be a teisted or slightly bent handlebar; as to the #$%* problem i cant comment!

Yeah there are several teenage kids in the complex...  And they hang out sometimes at night out where the bike sits.  Thing is, I've been living here almost 2 years and never had this problem.

I'm just aggrivated.  I normally control my anger very well, but today I lost it and broke my truck key when I threw the keyring on the ground.  I hate to imagine what I would have done if I had SEEN them do it...

I would be concerned with battery acid damage coming from the overflow tube as it's very corrosive. Check your battery level for acid loss.

I would notify my insurance company. Even if your car/cycle insurance doesn't cover it, your homeowners might. My homeowners covers one unregistered vehicle on my property. This was obviously a hit & run; get a police report to support your claim. Not a yellow-pad report; an official incident/accident report. Claim at least $1000 damage on the report.

Get parts quotes from your local dealer; not the online Fiche. You want high quotes, and if there is one thing Honda dealers are good for, it's high prices on parts.

Get those police to patrol the parking area more closely. They probably already know who the hooligans are. My police do. It doesn't take a Columbo to track them down.

You can get a $10 motion activated alarm for your scoot.
I have seen them at random bike shops for the past few years.
They are battery powered, and basically when moved, they go off.
If you had one , when the bike moved ,you would of heard it.
Prob. something to look into for the future...

I came out of my office the other day and went down to my bike, which was parked with other bikes in a little off-limits area of an outside parking lot beside our building.  It's also and area where smokers sometime hang out...

I get there to find some a-hole leaned up against the NOS brown seat of my '76 550F...  I gave him #$%* and was wearing my meanest black leathers when doing it.  Never seen him again, in or out of the office.  I also don't park there anymore.

Another time I watched in horror from inside the donut-hole as some moron in a minivan (are there any other kind?) backed into my '73 500K.  Tipped it over.  I ran out, stopped him, and made him go to a bank machine and take out $50 for me to fix my crunched $10 signal light.

When I first got my bike (& it was stock) , I came out to see some dude scape the side of his car with my left rear turn signal. The thing was allready bent, but he didn't know that  ;D
I got $20 bucks outa him for my "era correct" turn signal which he bent, and had a drink on him that night  :D

You just need to park your bike off the beaten path. I am a big fan of sidewalks, and other places where cars don't go...

does it get windy in your area?  perhaps, you're getting all disgruntled when you should be thinking about repositioning your bike to not catch wind.

I was sittin in the pub one night admiring my freshly painted 350 when some women jumps in her minivan proceeds to back into the bike knock it over and pull away without hesitating - I don't think she even realized she did it. By the time I got outside she was long gone. No major damage done but I'm alot more careful about where I park it now. People just don't see bikes - they aren't expecting them to be there or something.

I've parked the bike in the same spot for almost 2 years.  I'm over it now...  already replaced any lost oil and I figure scuffs give an old bike "character".

"Yeah, see that scuff right there?  Got that when some rich dumbass scraped me going down the highway a few years ago, almost took me down...  Well I caught up to him at a stoplight and kicked the bastard's door in.  Believe me, it cost me a lot less to repair the scuff than it took for the dealer to fix his jag's door..."

You should at least check your oil to see if it smells like gas.  When the bike was on its side, the fuel in the bowls could have poured into the cylinders and then down into the crankcase once you stood it back up, diluting the oil with gas.  Not good for lubrication and very bad for the crankshaft bearings.

I have to park on the street and my bike and my buddy's ninja sit next to each other in front of the house. The other day I come home and the neighbor tells me the kids next door to me where climing all over both bikes while I was at work! These are  the same kids who run around naked in the front yard and scream, one even cat calls old ladies as they walk by. Sorry to here about your bike.

I parked my bike in front of kellys oplympian here in downtown portland once, the parking is directly in front of the bar, its all MC parking there and the bar has huge glass front to it. I was inside the bar havin a beer and watched a guy walk by my bike, stop take a closer look, then he put his hands on the handlebars checkin out the feel of the clip ons, then he started to hoist his leg up over and sit himself down on my bike at which point i was outside saying hey what the hell you think your doing? He got off real quick and said hey cool bike man i was just checkin it out blah blah blah i said dude never touch someone else's bike without their permission you dumbass. He walked away mumbling. I work for a school district, and was notified by a hall monitor after school that someone had been sitting on my bike.  She chased them off and then came and told me, rather than letting me porve the point that you just don't do that.  She then preceded to tell me that it wasn't the first time she saw kids on it.  I don't know who is dumber in that situation, the kids or the monitor.  All I've got to say, is they better not let me catch them on my bike.  It's not something I would take kindly to.

     Hey DammitDan, ---------> >:( >:(
as previously suggested, do check your oil (frankly, I would change it) for gas going down through its innards.

Sorry to hear about what happened to your bike.  Believe me, I know the feeling.  I live in an apartment complex.  There have been 10 or 12 incidents with my bike.  The one that was a kicker was when I was standing at my bedroom window admiring my 750.

A guy walks by with a large drink in his hand, like a Circle K 64 oz. or something like that.

Gets to the bike. Stops, puts the drink on my BRAND NEW seat, knocks it over, across the seat, down the rear fender (chrome that was just polished & waxed) over my tail light and my brand new custom VETERAN license plate.  I yell out the window; he grabs what might remain of his drink; I shape shift for the front door.

He's running with the huge drink in his hand; I'm running with my heart in my hand (I'm close to 65 years old).  I can't keep it up too long............ I'm running and yelling, but, By God, I'm gaining on him..........  I'm going to catch him............. he suddenly throws his precious drink away and picks up speed..........My internal engine's burning coals are withering to fading embers.......... Damn!!!!, I can't catch him..................

I do keep my eyes peeled, just for a glance of him.........

Exactly! If some guys car was unlocked, would you just hop in to get the feel? of course not! But this is a motorcycle so i guess that means its ok.. ::) ::)

This is EXACTLY why I only put a few hundred miles on my bikes every year... general society is too stupid to be trusted to keep their filthy hands off.

Give me a Guinness, a smoke, and some classic rock on the radio in my garage, on a comfortable chair, surrounded by my bikes. Almost... almost I say, as good as riding.

We should all look into purchasing tasers to keep in out pockets for #$%*s such as these!!! ZAP!

I actually have a cover that I'm going to start keeping on it whenever I'm not riding.  I also found a nicely lit spot to park her.  There are several other bikes (all crotch rockets) out there that are almost always under covers...  Now maybe I understand why.

A stupid girl at work backed into my Moto Morini 3 1/2, smashed the rear light, two indicators, dinged the tank, scuffed a footrest, scraped the tacho bezel, squished the stainless steel tacho surround, bent the stainless steel tacho/speedo holder, etc.  Cost her over $500.00.  She doesn't park in that area anymore...

I didn't shout when she told me, I just went out & looked at the bike & kept saying (real soft like) "My poor baby...  look what you've done to my poor baby...".

However, if she'd hit my '78 CBX, I would've killed her!

My K5 when on the side stand is almost straight up, very slight lean.  You might consider using the center stand, it is much more stable.
