Is This Healthy????????
« on: November 25, 2012, 04:50:35 PM »
Installed a set of rings on one of my new pistons, is this amount of gap normal? Both the piston and rings are standard bore size btw

Did you check the gap with the rings in the bore?
Do you have a copy of the Honda Shop Manual or Parts List for your bike? Get one here:

Rebel, the gap is the distance between the ends of the ring when it's in the bore, like CycleRanger said.  I don't know what you're trying to show us with your photo.

Check it like so:

In the picture you showed the ring does look to big for the piston to me anyways.

That ring looks OS on a STD piston.New rings are ALMOST scary to install without breaking 1 because they fit that tight!!!

Hmmm well I'll have to check the gap once it's in the cylinder because both my pistons and rings claim they're std size

You will have SOME slop side to side but I've never seen THAT much of a new ring pushed out to one side of the ring groove!!!
Just for general info if you didn't know, rings are marked for top  with a dot or small circle!!!  If you get them wrong that 4 stroke turns into a 2 stroke smoker real quick!!

I doubt you will get that ring in the bore. It looks to big.

That pic looks to be a bit misleading.  Are you pushing the ring out from the other side?

If you buy a set of rings and they are in a package that is wrapped, the rings are allready stacked properly, in the right order with the marks facing up.

If you take them out of the package and mix them up  then all bets are off.

I looked at a STOCK piston with the second ring in place (#1 was broken) and if you push the ring into the groove from 180 degrees opposite the gap I measured a 5/16 gap and the complete width of the ring was OUT of the groove. Take a ring compressor and squeeze the ring down in the groove, each end of the ring should NOT touch each other. Place the ring in the bore as the other picture shows and measure the gap "The rings are serviceable if gap is .MM (.028 in)" from CB750 shop manual.
