More ignition help 78' CB750F
« on: November 23, 2012, 01:26:19 PM »
So I finally got back to work on the bike. It was running sluggish since I changed the throttle cable so I checked and it's routed correct and the slides open all the way at full throttle. I thought it might be an ignition problem so i pulled the plugs and they looked ok, 1&4 looked rich and 2&3 looked fine. I figured its a cheap fix to swap them out. Now i'm not getting spark at all. I replaced the battery a day before I snapped the throttle cable and it was running as good as ever. Since the cable swap its run sluggish, no torque and couldn't get it past 3rd gear downhill. I checked the point gaps and adjusted 2&3, i couldn't adjust 1&4 because the screw head started to give so i left it. Can it be the coils? It was running fine up until the throttle cable snapped. It ran slow yesterday, but it did run and idle, but the idle was low. Any thoughts?

unscrew the plug boots off the wire ends and trim em back no more than about 1/8 to 1/4 inch.  screw the boots back on and see if that dont fix the no spark issue.  while you have the boots off, stick ohmmeter across both sides and check if the resistors are good.  5k ohms or 10k ohms depending on which boots ya have.

Thanks kronus. I'm pretty clueless on electrical stuff (and not to sharp on everything else) Can you explain where to put the ohmmeter?

Put one end where the spark plug was and the other where the spark plug wire on the coil was. Look in the end where the coil wire was it has what looks like a screw end inside that you have to get your meter lead on. Hope that helps.

Like I said, i know less than nothing about electrical but after speaking with my uncle, who has been riding since before I was born, he gave me a few things to think about. When I went to adjust the point gaps there was no gap on either when they were open. Could that have contributed to the loss of power? Also, after I adjusted the gap on 2&3 but left 1&2 (screw head is stripping) is when I got no spark. Just trying to think of possibilities. I hope it's electrical and not an engine problem, i don't have the room, tools or smarts if there's big engine problems.

MOST DEFINATELY!!!  If you don't have point gaps set then it won't run!!! One of the best investments as far as a tool goes is get you a 3/8 drive IMPACT DRIVER. It will be used A LOT on bad screws. Here's what to look for

Thanks Xnavylfr, the first thing my uncle said when i mentioned the screw head stripping is needing an impact driver for Japanese screws (he's mainly a BMW guy). I'm thinking of going with the Pamco ignition and getting rid of the points. Any experience with that? Better/worse?

What happened to #4 ;D
You must set 1-4 before you set 2-3

](screw head is stripping)
You have to fix the screw before you go any further. No if ands or butts

I warned you I didn't know much, Ken....... Thanks, i'm thinking the impact driver method. If that doesn't work some pliers? I'll go back and set 1&4, and re do 2&3. Do you have any thoughts on replacing it with the Pamco ignition?
