My Newish 73 CB750 Cafe Build
« on: September 18, 2012, 02:53:03 PM »
Starting a build on one of two CB750's I picked up in April. Here's the tank and seat I picked up.

Got the frame hoop in!

Chopped Frame, I remember a time I would have paused before doing this. Not now!

Drilled for plug welds.... hoop too!

Test Fitment.

Hoop in and welded. Sanded smooth.

Seat final resting position.

Need to mount the tank up a little higher in front. Then build a battery tray under the seat hump. Then rear set mounts. Lots to do!!

This picture reminds me of some creature in Star Wars! Bantla?

Weather is cooling off and getting in some garage time. Got my wheels broke down and started on the front hub. Sanding the ribs down on it first.

Then bead blasted

Then polished

Then powder coated candy red

Have the rear insert done

Here are all the parts I have completed in two days

A close up of the rotor

Got alot more work done this weekend. Dropped teh wheels off at teh powder coaters since they wont fit in my oven. Trying to get everyrthing ready to reassembly upon their return.

Got the gold powder out and started hitting some accent pieces.

Took apart my shocks and powdered all the chrome.

I set my spokes up on a spoke farm and powdered them triple mirror black

Strung my nipples up like jewelry and painted them gold. I think that will pop against the red rims.

Rear chunk from the other side...

More to come later!

Man this is going to be one nice looking wild ride, do you have any plans for the motor performance wise?

Thanks Dan! I have a Cycle-X cam and hi tensile strength studs to put into it but haven't thought past that. As soon as the frame and oil tank are done I will start tearing into the motor to see what she looks like and make a call from there. Everything on this engine is an unknown at this point. I know it kicks over but I haven't done a compression check yet. I have another engine in another frame I can fall back on if needed. My buddy said it ran for him before I bought it. Thats all I know.....besides THIS!!

I got my parts back from the powdercoater!! Dropped off on Friday and picked up on Wednesday! Since they were doing my wheels I threw in a couple more parts since most of it is in the set up charges.

The Engine will be black but the engine covers will be powdered red!

These rims look sweet! Almost a blood red. They did a nice job on them.

when i look at beautifully chromed, painted or powdered parts on a motorcycle I get exhausted thinking about cleaning.  Having said that, it looks great so far.

Looks beautiful so far - I assume you are doing your own powdercoating?  What kind of setup are you using?

Also - I will follow this thread for this reason alone:

I bought a setup off of Ebay back in 04 for $135. It came with two pounds of powder of my choise. I have a home oven in the garage from someone renovating a new home with stainless. This 30" oven wasn't even used. Got it for $40.

Got my rear wheel spoked. Waiting on new bearings for the front to arrive to press into the hub on my press before building the wheel. The whole assembly wont fit on the press!  I thought I had plenty of bearings from the guy I bought the bikes off of but they are the wrong sizes. At least the new tapered steering head bearings will work.

What is that rear wheel in the early pics? I just scored a pair of 17" rims off a 98 vtr1000 superhawk and a complete front end and want to install them on my 76F. How'd the clearance look at the swingarm?
So much to do, so little time.

That is off of a Ducati Monster. It came On that frame when I bought it. I have the front one too, and the forks, trees, and all brakes and front fender. Planning on trying to fit these on the next build, a 76 K. The PO put some extra nuts between the rim and swingarm to see how it would fit. I will have the spacers milled when I get to that point.

Many changes this weekend…..I got my bearings from Ebay in two days! They arrived Saturday morning so I pressed them in the hub and went to spoking the rim. It is easier the second time around. One thing I learned that I didn’t read anywhere on spokeing, once the first spokes are attached to the nips, push the nips through the rim to rotate the hub. Then on the following spokes, push the nips through the rim to attach and this saves you from mis-spokeing the wrong holes.

Front Spokes completed on front rim.

Both wheels done

The PO cut off the rear set mounts before I got the bike. Thought I was going to have to make my own since the rearsets I bought clam shell around them. I was delighted to find them in a box of parts he gave me! I plasma cut the rear sleeves off and welded in the gap and flap wheel sanded then into nice nubs. Then I welded them outboard of the frame just a bit.

Bike as she sets today with the shocks on and a 76 GL1000 GW front end fitted to it. I need to fit the Road Star headlight, order tires, progressive springs, and start powdercoating the trees and lowers.

From the front, I have some Ducati Monster levers and master cylinder in black. Not sure what switches I am going to do yet.

My buddy Swill brought his wheel trueing jig over and helped me set the wheels stright. Almost had the front perfectly trued but the rear had a visual wobble to it.

What wheel is that on the back? I know it's not the one you're using but I like the look.

Your bike build is greatness! Subscribed.

Got the tires in and put them on with a $5 tire tool. Apparently the powdercoat IS really tough! Put the wheels on teh bike to test fit everything and found some issues to resolve.

Rolled the bike outside to take some pictures, side shot.

At the Bikes Blues and BBQ in Fayetteville AR last week I found this helmet!! This is EXACTLY what I was picturing for the paint job! 80 skulls with red candy on top.

That is all for now!

Cheese, is the front rim an 18" rim?  If so where did you find spokes.  I'd like to replace my 19" front rim with an 18" rim, but I really don't want to pay for custom spokes.
