Windshield point of reference thread
« on: July 10, 2006, 05:49:17 PM »
For the windblown masses having a hard time visualizing how the many available windshields may look mounted on our beloved sohc4s, I wish to make a request.  I am calling on all of those who have found a windscreen they are happy with to show us a picture of it on your bike and let us know what make/model it is and how or where one can be had.  Even if you have a windshield that is not readily available, if it looks good on a 70's era honda show me a picture and tell me what it is.  If it's cool enough i may just devote my life to tracking one down.  and then you won't be the only one to have it and you will have to get over that because there are more important things in life.  Like taking the bite out of the superslab wind beast.  Pics are best but any info appreciated.
Thanks
-KK

PS: my personal prefs: i am looking for something i can put on when i need it.  so far i have liked this one that i can't identify and the early honda police series windscreen pictured below

I really like the retro look of it, especially the metal trim...I put on a 17"  "Street Shield" from J.C. Whitney (about 60.00 I think). I like the size relative to the bike..it doesn't overpower it or make it look like a cop bike...it's easily removable, blocks wind ok, although after a few hours, you feel as if you've really been riding.

I'd like to see some pics/read info on windscreens too. Haven't been able to decide if I want to sacrifice the cool look for the comfort. Maybe if I find one I like it'll sway my decision. Also, do the "bikini" fairings deflect wind at all? Or do they just look cool?  :D

BTW, ces, I like yours. Small enough to not detract from the look of the bike, big enough to work.

Also, there's a sticker on my bike (I assume on all CBs  ??? ) that says to not attach a windscreen. Is this a real concern, or just Honda trying to cover their a$$ ?

Here are some shots of mine. I think it compliments the bags and the rack nicely. It works great in all kinds of weather. that last picture in of the barley-visible logo. Mabe someone recognises it?

BTW, that is a sticker I put on, the "cky", it's a band that I like. Incase anyone was wondering.

cheers; will

And another thing, I have no idea where it originally came from, I just found it hanging from the ceiling of my dads garage a few months ago.

3sticks,
It appears to be a Plexifairing III or a copy of it.  I had one on my GS650 for alot of years.  Good coverage, but it comes off clean and quick (without tools!)  if you don't want the fairing.  Possible downside, it comes off so quick and clean that mine took a walk one night and was never seen again.

Sadly, since I was always taking it on and off, it was a month before I realized it was gone...

Rushoid, I never saw a sticker on my buke about windshields, by I'm not sure I'd pay attention to it anyway...on a CB, you're so upright, that at 65mph, I was blown to hell and back to the point that I never wanted to ride on the highway!

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of riding on the highway either. Although I was surprised at how much the wind effect was reduced once I started wearing my Joe Rocket mesh jacket. I guess because it fits closer to the body than my old jacket so there's less to catch the wind. I'm a big guy too, so it's not like I'm aerodynamic or anything.  :D

With the shield I use, I'm perfectly comfortable going 60 on the parkway here. It really does make an immense diffrence.

I'll add my vote for the Street Shield that Ces is using.  I have one exactly like it that I use on my 750 during the Winter.  Doesn't detract too much from the look of the bike and really helps out when the temp drops below freezing.  I leave the mounting hardware on the bike during the Summer so it's a five minute job putting it back on in the Fall.

Let's hold off on voting until we have more than 2 examples.  I know windshields aren't that popular around here, but c'mon folks they are out there.  aren't they?  and i for one do not need more windshields on my list to avoid. they all seem like windshields to avoid to me.  so unless it flew off at 55 mph and cut your head clean off your still riding body, or made your bike utterly revolting to pretty girls, I don't need to hear about it.

So far I also like the street shield best (better?,) but that's not to say that 3 stick's dad's camp kill yourself screen doesn't have its charm.  the field has not presented itself, sadly, and until it does I am going on protest.  I will not exceed 45 miles per hour until we have at least 3 examples of windshield to vote on or whatever.  That's about all I can do in a parking lot any way, unless it was a mall on christmas- or do they have shopping on christmas too now, but do not let that detract from the gravity of my act of resistance.  and if you've got a windshield freaking post a pic and a few freaking words about it.  unless that would just ruin your day then by all means keep that knowledge all to yourself- yer windshield is probably #$%*ty anyhow >:(

Unearthing this because it's getting to be 'that time of year'...

along with (apparently most people?) in this thread, I'll be mounting a NC Street Shield this fall....
how about everyone else?

yeah, 'real men' like getting pelted with rain at 65mph. it builds character.  they enjoy the arctic blasts and sleet.  it puts hair on their chests...

...then again, I have a certain dislike for those so-called 'real men'.  ::)

...so for realistic human beings who ride year-round...

Yes.  Apparently "real men" like having their toes, fingers, and face too stiff to move, so it enhances your on-road alertness to hazards.

I was a "real man" once, I suppose.  Mostly cause I was poor, young, and dumb.  Now, I'm happy to keep the windshield AND fairing for winter riding.  (Or, any long distance riding for that matter.)  Without the wind flogging you all day, you can actually do something beside sleep and rest when you get to your destination.
Then again, perhaps "real men" don't ride their bike more than a half hour per day?

"Real men"  Pheh...

Someone trying to compensate for a little...
oh never mind. ::)

Getting back where this thread was going before the "manly" talk started....

I put a Slip stream spitfire S-06,smoked,on my 550,I was riding a BMW r80rt,and got used to the protection, the Spitfire is fairly small and keeps alot of the wind off my chest, blows most of the bugs up over my head and I get no helmet buffeting

I put a small stainless bracket on the headlight bucket to anchor the lower part of the windshield,it took a few minutes to align everything ,but I do not remove the windshield at all

Why ride with a big ole helmet and face shield to keep wind and rain out of your eyes/face?
Why ride with gloves or a jacket to keep the wind off you?  Why not ride with sandals and cutoffs so you can feel the wind in your toes and nether regions?
Might as well take the bus. :P

What a silly conversation.
