Cb550 Standard brake pedal height adjustment & idle speed
« on: December 02, 2012, 04:33:25 PM »
Hi Everyone,

First post and hot off my first short but happy ride on my new Cb550.

I'm wondering if the brake pedal can be adjusted down the way, gear shifter obviously no problem, but the rear pedal seems to sit way above the level of the peg, which was putting a little bit of pain into my hip now the cafe bars are on it. ( a job I really didn't expect to be so traumatic with all the rerouting etc ) Anyway, is it as simple as removing it and re-indexing it down a few splines? The factory pictures seem to show it almost flat, or maybe a little under the peg level. On mine it's high, the attached picture will show that.

Also now I have removed the home made, yes HOME MADE! air filters. Which were the old airbox tubes with pot scouring pads glued to the ends, there is no more lean running, which means the jets seem to have been upped already, even on 4 oiled cones it seems very happy along side the 4:1 Jama, which was blissful news as realistically I can take it to be dynoed before the new season in the UK. Moving on again, I think I have read it should idle at about 1100 -> 1800 rpm, what is correct?

Sans single seat, indicator swap and a good service it's all good to go. Which will make a nice change in riding style from my BMW 650gs for the summer evenings and leisurely rides.

Looking forward to your responses and no doubt this won't be my first post!

Steven

You should find a stop bolt on the back side of the brake pedal pivot, right near the top of the brake rod linkage.  Loosen the bolt's lock nut and adjust the bolt to create the desired pedal height. Then, check the position of the brake rod linkage at the brake panel on the rear wheel. Make sure the brake arm lever and the brake linkage rod form a roughly 80-90 degree angle when applied.  If not, adjust the set nut that holds the brake rod in the brake arm.

Lastly, check your rear brake light to make sure it engages at the proper application of the rear brake; you want the light to come on very shortly after the brake is lightly applied.
