Honda CB1100 Observations
« on: December 04, 2012, 03:42:41 AM »
The news is out that Honda will be releasing the Retro CB1100 to the United States and also to countries in Europe.

I bought one when they initially hit the shores here in Australia.
My mind had already been made up after seeing them on display at the Tokyo Motor Show and also reading a few reviews.
Basically I was flying blind when I purchased the bike and I just had a good feeling about it.
The truth is, that it was a bias decision that I have no regrets about.

Firstly, I'll say that I don't push it to the limit and beyond as those days are now history. (Self preservation I think are the right words  ;) ;D)
To me, they are great machine that respond well, handle well and stop well.
It also tracks quite well at high speed.

The seat is something that I persevered with for a while and was replaced with a Honda "K" style seat that came from http://japan.webike.net/HONDA/CB1100/311/mtop/
That did improve the riding position and also provided quite a bit more comfort to the backside on a long ride.

There are a few "tweaks" that can be done to the foot brake and gear lever which is a personal preference thing.

The only other change that was made is the exhaust.
A Titanium Yoshimura 4/1 lightened the bike and the throttle response did noticeably improve.

With a heavy pillion passenger, it is a pig to ride.

Admittedly, there has been a desire to explore performance mods but I'm happy to just throw a leg and go for a good blast.

I looked at the web site that Mick used for his seat. The product descriptions must be the result of language translation software. The description of a 4-4 exhaust (http://japan.webike.net/products/20366036.html) got my attention.

"Thoroughly pursuing the style and sound of yesteryear CB750K series concentrated on the technology of アールズギア, made up "Wyvern classic CB1100" Finally finished. Reproduced, four for the CB1100 update unique sound with the overwhelming presence of cum."

Makes you wonder.

Did you have any  problems with fiability ?

Can you seee some rust on chrome-plated parts ? (on my 2009 CBF600, yes  >:()

What about the fuel consumption ?

Mick, you are making me lust after this bike even more than I already am. I will probably have to sell all but the wife's bike in order to get one. I've been looking at the new Bonnevilles and Moto Guzzi 7Vs, but just couldn't bring myself to buying a non-Japanese bike. I even test rode a Yamaha FJR1300, but the CB1100 is definitely the one for me.

That's a neat exhaust Bob.  They're bonkers if they think they're going to have many takers at that price though.  At that price it's ridiculous that they didn't make it out of titanium and repaint the tank with crushed unicorn bone.

Mick, my beef with the thing is the too small fuel capacity.  What kind of range are you seeing on a tank of gas?  Thanks.

I like it! Wouldn't mine getting one if I could afford it. Hold on to it for 40 years and it might be a collectors item just like the original 750's are today. Only problem I would be 95 years old than ???

Gents
Below is a link to a test ride/review that was done back in 2010 and I would say that it sums this bike up accurately.
http://news.drive.com.au/drive/bike-reviews/honda-cb1100-review-20100609-xw2w.html

As this guy mentions, (and others have too) the fuel capacity is one drawback and the seating position doesn't suit some.
I read or watched a review where it was mentioned that the seat height wouldn't suit a person over 6ft.
I changed the seat mainly due to the comfort factor being close on 6ft tall myself.
The seating height is something that I could've learned to live with.

Converting the figures in the review:
Fuel Capacity - 14.6 litres = 3.8 US Gallons (240Kms = 150 Miles app)
Fuel Consumption - 6 Litres/100Km = 39 MPG

The fuel consumption and fuel range will vary slightly depending on how the bike is ridden but these figures are in the ball park.

Here's some photos of the bike with the "K" Seat.

It's a lot kinder on the backside than the original.

That's a drop in price by about 1/3 in comparison to the cost here in Oz.
I'm guessing that the Honda marketing mob must have taken the economic climate into consideration as well to do that.

The story is that they had their tail between their legs when the Honda 4's hit the US market back in the late 60's.
It wasn't long before those tails started wagging and here we are 40 odd years later still wagging our tails.  ;D  8)

Beautiful! Is the K seat just an easy bolt on, Mick?

They are not for sale in the U.S. yet, right? So the $10K price may not be real?

The Webike Japan place where I bought it from have used an original Honda seat base or a real good copy of it.
They are made out of a hard plastic type material.
